Duties
|
• Evaluate current operations and resource flow to identify opportunities to increase waste management efficiencies and reduce overall waste
• Conduct campus waste audit(s) to understand composition of campus waste streams
• Work with BGM to update Solid Waste Sustainability Master Plan
• Identify opportunities in procurement to reduce environmental impact
• Identify opportunities to educate end users and foster sustainable behavior change
• Make policy recommendations for green procurement and waste reduction
• Support UH Mānoa campus in reducing its negative environmental impact
• Help to develop data-based performance measures to improve resource use efficiencies and waste reduction through pilot projects
• Support annual convening of sustainability leaders from all ten campuses at the Hawaii Sustainability in Higher Education Summit each Spring to foster peer learning experiences, share best practices and strengthen peer networks
• Seek to learn from the rich foundation of indigenous Hawaiian cultural values and knowledge to help the campus develop a uniquely strong response to climate change and sustainability challenges
• Cultivate a university-wide culture that integrates sustainability values in an island context with global impact
The student will work directly with UHOS and BGM to develop a Zero Waste Plan to inform development of data-driven targets, goals, and metrics to develop strategies for improving operational efficiencies to advance the universityʻs waste diversion and reduction goals outlined in Executive Sustainability Policy EP 4.202.
Assorted data exists for various waste diversion and waste reduction programs conducted on campus, however these data sets need to be updated, compiled, verified and further analyzed to determine a suitable baseline from which we can track and measure progress.
Through this program, our goal is to cultivate future leaders who are informed, engaged, and equipped with the knowledge & practical tools needed to help solve the climate-change-related challenges faced by communities all over the world.
