A minimum of one college-level course completed in the biological sciences. Intermediate experience with MS Word, Excel, Adobe Acrobat, and Google Drive systems. Able to type and work on a computer for extended periods of time. Able to work independently or with minimal supervision. Able to take photos and write posts for Facebook and Twitter social media sites. Beginner experience communicating with the public for outreach education or community service. Experience with Adobe InDesign and basic website editing (Website Builder software) is preferred but not required. Must have a reliable transportation method to/from Windward Mall in Kaneohe in order to catch the shuttle to get to HIMB/Coconut Island.


Assist with Gates Coral Lab communications and projects. Responding to questions from the public over email and creating templates for responses to frequently asked questions. Using Google Drive to organize and share documents. Organizing and updating Excel spreadsheets. Assisting with website updates using Website Builder. Taking photos and writing posts for Facebook and Twitter accounts. Formatting newsletters using Adobe InDesign and meeting agendas using Microsoft Word. Transcribing meeting notes using Microsoft Word. Conducting research using Google search engines. Assistance writing thank you cards to donors. Communicating with the public at outreach events either at HIMB or other locations on Oahu. Assisting in the development of curricula. Some time may also be spent assisting with coral activities such as snorkeling, deploying or retrieving equipment on boats, assisting with experiments in indoor/outdoor tanks, preparing materials for experiments, pipetting, data analyses using computer software, and data entry. Other duties as assigned. Continuation is dependent on satisfactory performance, available funds, and actual staffing needs.
