Position Title

Student Assistant for Turtle Stranding

Pay Rate

$14.90

Qualifications

• Major in Marine Science, Biology, or related field preferable
• Responsible
• Take initiative to learn
• Ability to work independently or with minimal supervision
• If involvement in stranding activities is required, the student assistant must possess a valid driver’s license and own a truck or SUV capable of transporting animals (mileage will be reimbursed)
• If involvement in in-water capture of sea turtles is required, the student assistant must be able to swim and complete the NOAA snorkel certification
• Sophomore- or Junior-class standing preferred
• Must follow established protocol accurately
• Record and write technical reports clearly in a computer program
• Must be available during time of calls, which also includes early evenings, weekends, and holidays
• Ability to lift at least 50 pounds
• Must be able to interact in an effective and harmonious manner with the general public
• Must be available for at least one 3-hour block of time during weekday/ working hours

Duties

May be requested to perform some or all of the duties:
• Participate in NMFS training/s
• Be on-call to assist biologists in responding to stranded animals (sea turtles and marine mammals – including monk seals and cetaceans) including determination if animal is resting/injured/dead
• Be on site of call
• Record data in field book
• Transport animals to appropriate facility
• Under supervision, participate in necropsy/husbandry/rehabilitation/ veterinary procedures/veterinary care of animals
• Prepare and submit full narrative reports
• Enter/query data from databases
• Archiving of samples and sample shipment to research partners
• Conduct laboratory research under supervision – including analysis of foraging location (stable isotope), age/growth (skeletochronology), sex or reproductive status (endocrinology), diet composition, and nutritional status
• Conduct field research under supervision – including in-water capture of sea turtles and/or sea turtle nesting beach surveys
• Be on-call when needed
