Job Summary
Regular, Part-Time (50% FTE), RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources (CTAHR), Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Management (NREM), located in Honolulu, Hawai‘i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.
MONTHLY SALARY: Salary commensurate with qualifications.
DUTIES: Assists the project leader in performing scientific data processing and analysis of satellite remote sensing data over land to validate and improve algorithms planned for the Joint Polar-orbiting Satellite System (JPSS) vegetation products. Designs and performs C/C++ programming to process and analyze a large volume of satellite image data and ground/tower observational time series data. Applies statistical analyses to satellite and ground time series data for product validation and algorithm development/improvement. Summarizes data processing and analysis results into publication-quality graphics and tables, and technical reports. Performs other additional tasks as they emerge.
PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING: Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Remote Sensing, Resource Management, Environmental Science, Geography, Ecology, or other relevant discipline involving studies of the use of Remote Sensing (Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Remote Sensing, Geography, or Physical Science and at least three (3) years of relevant work experience in the use of satellite imagery may substitute for a Master’s Degree). EXPERIENCE: One to three (1-3) years of experience in the use of satellite imagery to quantitatively derive information about biological phenomena, or physical characteristics of terrestrial vegetation/ecosystems. One to three (1-3) years of experience in processing satellite remote sensing data and ground/tower remote sensing/flux time series data. Authorship or co-authorship of at least two (2) scientific or technical papers, and presentations made at scientific or technical conferences, or to management agencies. Experience working on research teams. Experience coordinating with partner agencies concerned with satellite product developments. ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS: Understanding of the acquisition, algorithm development, product validation, applications and limitations of satellite imagery for land vegetation research. Strong working knowledge of quantitative methods for manipulating a large volume of data from satellites. Working knowledge of common statistical procedures used with data derived from satellite imagery to develop methods and test results. Basic knowledge and understanding of vegetation biophysical parameters, and physiological and ecological processes affecting gross primary production and net ecosystem exchange. Working knowledge of common spatial data integration methods and multiple spatial data formats. Working knowledge of spatial analysis models and spatial statistics. Basic knowledge of Unix system administration. Proficiency with scientific programming in C/C++ for manipulating and processing image-based and point-based time series data. Proficiency with scientific data processing. Familiarity with manipulating data in various scientific formats, such as HDF, HDF5, HDF-EOS, NetCDF, etc. Familiarity with data management. Ability to manipulate a large volume of data in UNIX environment. Ability to design and develop statistical data analysis methods and ability to interpret data analysis results. Ability to incorporate large sets of data and meet various reporting needs. Proficiency with image processing software used to work with satellite imagery, such as Environment for Visualizing Images (ENVI), Matlab, etc. Ability to work and make decisions independently and to meet programmatic requirements within schedule and budgetary constraints. Ability to independently plan, organize, and implement multiple tasks. Proficiency with basic office productivity software tools (word processors, spreadsheets, presentation software). Working knowledge of desktop publishing, photo editing, and graphic design software. Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout duration of employment to transport gear and to attend meetings. PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS: Job requires ability to maintain high degree of visual/color acuity to perform detailed imagery analysis for prolong periods. SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS: Previous experience with any of the following: Doctor’s degree from an accredited educational institution specialized in remote sensing or a related field; familiarity with radiative transfer theories and radiometry for optical remote sensing, including vegetation indices, BRDF, and atmospheric correction; working knowledge on satellite algorithm development such as vegetation indices, BRDF, fAPAR, LAI, phenology etc.; experience in satellite product validation; familiarity with scripting, including shell programming, Python, etc.; proficient with ArcGIS or other software for visualization of satellite image and data analysis results Administrative experience with Windows and/or UNIX networks.
