ABOUT: At the Lyon Arboretum, we support and challenge individuals to develop skills, fulfill their potential, enrich their lives, and become contributing, culturally aware members of our community. The living plant collections of the Lyon Arboretum harbor many wild-collected, unusual, rare and even threatened plant taxa from all around the tropical world. This internship would be an introduction to arboriculture and the care of tropical trees. The internship would provide practical arborist skills and give the participant knowledge in scientific tree care.

DUTIES: The Arborist Intern will work with Lyon arboretum staff arborists to determine maintenance schedules for pruning trees, tree removal, cabling/bracing of trees, climbing trees, rigging operations to lower limbs, and the operation of heavy equipment such as chainsaws. The Arborist Intern will also learn how to take inventories and monitor tree health, record diseases, pests and other attributes of the trees in the collection. This internship will also provide the practical skills to implement plans to manage pests, diseases or health problems among the tree and palm species.

QUALIFICATIONS: Applicant must be a recently graduated high school or college student interested in arboriculture, tropical horticulture, Hawaii’s tree care industry or related field. Applicant must be proficient in MS programs, able to work in inclement weather and carry up to 50 lbs.

SCHEDULE: Part Time; 20 hours per week from May 21 2018* – July 13, 2018 (8 weeks)
* Start date is flexible

PAY: $2,000 stipend ($12.50/hr)

TRAIL BUILDING INTERNSHIP 2018 (View as a PDF)

ABOUT: At Lyon Arboretum, we support and challenge individuals who want to develop new skills, enrich their lives, and become contributing and culturally aware members of our community. The 197-acre Arboretum has over 8 miles of trails that showcase rare and unique living plant collections. Most of them are not readily accessible by visitors and there is an urgent need to address this shortcoming. This position would provide an introduction to trail building and restoration, and let you develop practical skills in constructing walkways to enhance visitor experience of the living collection.

DUTIES: The Trail Building Intern will work with Lyon Arboretum staff to assess key trails throughout the collection and revitalize them. The Trail Building Intern will learn to evaluate appropriate trail design that is safe for visitors, and durable in a tropical rainforest environment. Interns will utilize their skills to install new trails and improve existing trails throughout the Arboretum. Activities will include clearing vegetation, leveling, grading, constructing, installing, and gravelling in accordance with Lyon’s trail building procedures. The intern will also construct water-bars to mitigate erosion once they develop an understanding of water flow dynamics and its erosional effects on pathways. Lastly, the Trail Building Intern will also recommend and install appropriate plant and directional signage.

QUALIFICATIONS: Applicant must be a recently graduated high school/college student interested in landscape design, engineering, urban planning or related field. Proficient in MS programs; be able to work in inclement weather and carry 50 lbs. Must be over 18 years of age and have a Hawaii State Driver’s License. Some construction background preferred.
