Applications are being accepted for a Research Assistant to conduct data collection, entry, and analysis for endangered Hawaiian birds at the Keauhou Bird Conservation Center in Volcano, Hawai‘i. This is an excellent opportunity for those wishing to contribute to meaningful conservation efforts while gaining research experience.
This is a part-time position (approx 20 hours per week) starting in April or May 2018 (negotiable). This is also a temporary position of approximately 6 months, but no more than 12 months.
The Keauhou Bird Conservation Center is one of two conservation breeding facilities in Hawai‘i for critically endangered Hawaiian birds. This facility is a crucial component of intensive conservation and reintroduction efforts for critically endangered avian species such as the ‘Alalā, ‘Akikiki, Palila, Kiwikiu, and ‘Akeke‘e.
The successful applicant will assist a Postdoctoral Associate with research activities relating to conservation breeding, husbandry and reintroduction science. Responsibilities may include: collecting and recording behavioral data; entering and organizing data; conducting quality control of data; and contributing to analysis and writing.
Qualifications are one (or more) of the following: courses taken or experience working with statistics; previous experience conducting either field or captive research relating to animal behavior or learning; and/or a Bachelor's degree in any of the biological sciences or equivalent vocational experience in conservation. A valid drivers license and good standing with the DMV is required. Selected candidate must be able to identify diverse colored identification tags on birds.
