Become part of Hawaii’s conservation story

The Fifth Annual North Shore Food Summit is entitled “Community Land, Community Food,” and will emphasize timely land-related issues and opportunities affecting the North Shore food system. Building from this focus on land, this year’s North Shore Food Summit adopts the theme of I ulana hou ka moena p ā wehe, or “to re-weave the patterned mat.” This theme references the ʻōlelo noʻeau (traditional Hawaiian wise saying) Ka moena p ā wehe o Mokul ēʻi a, or “the patterned mat of Mokulēʻ ia.” Much like the entire moku of Waialua, Mokulēʻia was once so agriculturally productive that its terraces resembled an intricately woven mat when seen from above. The summit’s various keynote presentations and panel discussions will “weave” these proven traditional systems with compatible strategies and considerations from the region’s current political, economic, and social context, with the goal of restoring the ancestral abundance of Waialua and Ko‘olauloa in contemporary times. 

The 5th Annual North Shore Food Summit will address these interconnected issues through a variety of activities including field trips, keynote presentations, panel discussions, and a mālama ʻāina stewardship project.
