The Pu‘u Wa‘awa‘a excursion will have participants spend the day in the dry forest, with the option to participate in several different activities related to outplanting native species and tending to existing restored areas.
Specialists with knowledge of the forest unit, from a variety of perspectives (e.g., local/traditional, scientific, and management perspectives), will be on hand for group dialogue and shared-learning opportunities. This excursion is open to 100 participants.
Timeline for the Pu‘u Wa‘awa‘a Forest excursion:
8am - Meet at Pu‘u Wa‘awa‘a gate [Directions below] (Please note mandatory biosecurity precautions attached)
9am – Orientation/Protocol at Meeting House
9:30am – Overview and demonstration of restoration procedures to be used for the day
9:45am-3:00pm – Science and Service Learning with midday lunch
3:00 - Final words
3:30pm – All depart from the forest to drive home
What to bring: Lunch/snacks for the full day
Hat/sunscreen
Water for the full day
Hiking Boots (rough terrain – lava rock)
Rain gear – layers to deal with changing weather conditions.
Please note: dry forest conditions: be sure to have adequate water, sunscreen, hat, and lightweight field clothes. Work will occur on a‘a lava so solid shoes are a must.

Directions to Pu‘u Wa‘awa‘a
From Kailua: Take the Māmalahoa highway (190) north past Makalei golf course. After the 22 mile marker, and just before ascending the bluff to Pu‘u Anahulu, watch for the Ranch entrance on the mauka side. Enter through the white gate and follow the signs to the event parking area. Allow approximately 40 minutes travel time from Kailua to reach the parking area.
From Waimea: Take the Mamalahoa highway (190) south past the Big Island Country Club. After the 21 mile marker and just after descending the bluff, watch for the Ranch entrance on the mauka side. Enter through the white gate and follow the signs to the event parking area. Allow approximately 35 minutes travel time from Waimea to reach the parking area.
Parking: There will be parking in a large mowed field, signs will be posted, with an approximate 5 minute walk to the event site. Do NOT bring pets to the event since there are nēnē in the area.
