Hawaiʻi Climate Week, January 9-11th, 2023, at the Imin Conference Center, East-West Center will be full of events centered on climate change in Hawaiʻi, hosted by a suite of local organizations concerned with changing climate conditions in the islands, including the Hawaiʻi State Climate Commission, the Pacific Islands Climate Adaptation Science Center (PI-CASC), University of Hawaiʻi Sea Grant College Program, Pacific RISA, and the East-West Center.
The Climate Commission’s annual conference (website) highlights the climate change initiatives of the State of Hawaiʻi and its many partners, and strategically identifies what actions we must collectively pursue to mitigate the potentially catastrophic effects of global warming.
The PI-CASC Hawaiʻi Climate Adaptation Science Summit (website) focuses on climate adaptation science for managing changing conditions associated with drought and wildfire, integrated watersheds, and sea-level rise, as well as exploring researcher-manager-practitioner engagement and linking to human elements of climate adaptation.
Please use the form below to register for the public events of the week. Unless otherwise noted, events will take place at the Imin Conference Center, East-West Center adjacent to the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa campus in Honolulu. All events are designed for in-person participation, and some will have the option of online viewing (meeting broadcast link to be provided with registration).
Hawaiʻi Climate Week Agenda:
- • Monday, January 9, 9:00am-5:00pm: Hawaiʻi Climate Action Day (Hawaiʻi State Climate Conference, open registration). Connect with leaders in climate change action in the state. What problems has climate change caused in the state and how are we addressing them? Looking through the lens of natural solutions, we will explore the challenges and solutions of climate change in Hawaiʻi.
- • Monday, January 9, 5:30-7:30pm: Youth Climate Summit at the UH Law School Auditorium (open registration, preference given to registrants ages 12-26). The first Hawaiʻi Youth Climate Action Summit is open to youth from across Hawaiʻi who are passionate about organizing around and responding to the impacts of climate change on our communities and ecosystems. The summit will focus on identifying key levers for accelerating adaptation actions around topics such as climate justice, Traditional and Indigenous knowledge, and equitable policy. Participants will provide lighting talks around current initiatives and implementation gaps and form networks that can amplify needed actions.
- • Tuesday, January 10, 12:30-5:00pm: Hawaiʻi Climate Adaptation Science Summit, Day 1 (open registration, hosted by PI-CASC). Join researchers, resource managers, officials, practitioners, and other science-users working on climate change impacts and adaptation for ecosystems and communities in Hawaiʻi and around the Pacific. Learn more about, and participate in discussions on, climate adaptation science for managing changing conditions in three topical themes: drought and wildfire in the Pacific Islands, integrated watershed science, sea-level rise adaptation science.
- • Wednesday, January 11, 9:30-11:00am: Pacific Island Women Leaders at COP27: Outcomes and Ways Forward (open registration, hosted by the the EWCA Affinity Group: Women, Leadership and Sustainability). On 20 November, the 27th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP27), which took place in the Egyptian coastal city of Sharm el-Sheikh, concluded with a historic decision to establish and operationalize a loss and damage fund, which Pacific Islands have been critical in advocating for. This discussion will feature an analysis of outcomes with four women from Hawaiʻi who attended the COP.
- • Wednesday, January 11, 9:00am-2:30pm: Climate Adaptation Planning & Implementation Peer Exchange (invite only, hosted by Pacific RISA).
