Intro to Kapa Arts Workshop - WithOutWalls Workshop

The Intro to Kapa Arts Class will allow students to touch upon some of the arts associated with kapa making, as there are many!  Students will learn some history and information about bark cloth, and will try their hand at stripping the wauke trees and beating the fiber. 

Each student is also asked to bring a dye made at home from some part of a plant or from earth and we will talk about traditional dyes and will paint a piece of kapa. Then we will learn about a Hawaiian method of decorating kapa using "class-friendly" ohe kapala stamps and print on a canvas bag. 

Students will be able to take home all the items they make in class!

We are thrilled to have Dalani Tanahy teach this workshop. Dalani is a 25 practitioner of Hawaiian kapa and kapa arts.  She started her career as the kumu kapa for the Cultural Learning Center at Ka`ala and since 2008 has been the owner of her own business, Kapa Hawaii, LLC.  As a teacher of a once 'lost' art, Dalani considers the sharing and teaching of kapa arts a very important component in her business, along with making and selling kapa.  Clients include the Aulani Disney Resort and Spa, Ka Makana Ali`i Mall, the Wailea Marriott Kapa Restaurant and many other commercial installations.  She has also made numerous kapa pieces for kumu hula and singer Keali`i Reichel, the Dalai Lama, and the late Jimmy Borges as well as clients from around the world.  Dalani has participated in a number of kapa and art shows, including "Shifting Patterns: Pacific Barkcloth Clothing" in 2015, the first public exhibit of some of the vast collection of bark cloth in the British Museum in London, England.
