This year we’ll kick-off the day with a “Run for the Ocean.” This 5K event will start at 9 am. Sign-up on Active.com today. Don’t run off after the race, you’ll want to meet the celebrity of the day, BIG MAMA! She’s a life-sized, walk-inside, inflatable Humpback Whale! Explore BIG MAMA’s internal and external anatomy with experts from NOAA Hawaiian Island National Marine Sanctuary. Learn about what makes Humpbacks important to our waters and how they are being affected by climate change. For a free, fun-filled day for all ages don’t miss the North Shore Ocean Fest!
The North Shore Ocean Fest, an annual fundraiser sponsored by North Shore Ocean Education Coalition, will be held Saturday, June 1, 2019, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the Bay View Lawn at the beach at Turtle Bay Resort. The theme for Ocean Fest for 2019 is “Climate Change: How it’s affecting our Ocean”. The event honors “World Oceans Day,” celebrated annually on June 8 since 2002 to promote ocean education worldwide.
Don’t forget to bring water bottles or just buy a new one from Kokua Hawaii Foundation. “Ocean Fest is a “Plastic FREE event. It’s a really tough habit to break but we know it’s important for our planet! Says Dotty Kelly-Paddock, Ocean Fest Coordinator.
Ocean Fest will again feature K-12 student art and poetry celebrating the ocean. Winning entries for 2019 will be displayed at the North Shore Ocean Fest and winners will be recognized at a special awards ceremony during the day.
