Honolulu/Throughout Oahu
The Kupu RISE Program, in partnership with Keep the Hawaiian Islands Beautiful (KHIB), is hiring a RISE Fellow to support a project to implement the Keep America Beautiful Litter Index, a national methodology for assessing litter, throughout Oahu. The RISE Fellow will work with KHIB to plan a series of litter surveys in three to five locations per City Council district where trained volunteers will walk through predetermined areas and count the amount and types of visible litter. The results of these litter surveys are collected into the Litter Index, which will be updated annually and used to track sources and potential solutions for litter island-wide.
RISE Fellow Duties and Responsibilities
The RISE Fellow will work closely with Keep the Hawaiian Islands Beautiful and the RISE Program Manger to complete the following activities by type:
Operations Support (85%)
Primary Goals
• Develop and implement Litter Index in a majority of the nine City Council districts and the nested 33 district council areas
• Collect and enter litter survey results in the KAB-approved format
• Complete KHIB’s Litter Index requirements for KAB affiliate status
• Use the Litter Index to track the results of the Ala Moana trash bin pilot
Secondary Goals
• Network with neighborhood stakeholder groups to help to strengthen island-wide network for litter cleanups
• Share the results of the Litter Index with neighborhood groups to identify and mitigate sources of litter
• Assist with turning volunteers out for the International Coastal Cleanup (September) and Great American Cleanup (March)
• Other duties as assigned
Weekly responsibilities
• Update progress chart showing the steps toward full development of the Litter Index in each council district
• Do brief update memo on progress with litter survey planning and stakeholder networking
• Coordination call or meeting with KHIB to discuss progress to date and next steps
Sustainable Seminar Series - S3 (15%)
• Attend a seminar series throughout employment that consists of reading/writing, workshops, community outreach events, field trips, speakers, and other learning opportunities.
• Assist in the conception and implementation of seminar series events as assigned, desired, and available.
• This includes professional development meetings with project mentor.
• Note: The seminar series is intended to compliment work tasks, and may only be attended upon the successful completion of primary work deliverables.
