Position Overview

Position Location: Honolulu, HI; Fellow may be required to work at Kamehameha Schools, Kawaiahao Plaza (Honolulu), State of Hawai’i DOA and/or home/school/virtual office at times

Hours: 15-19 hrs/week

Salary: Up to $5,000/stipend March 1st-June 30th

Essential Duties 

  • Work State of Hawaii DOA Farm to School Coordinator to develop policy guidelines to be adopted by Farm to School programs and educational institutions across the state of Hawaii;
  • Work with Kamehameha Schools Sustainability Manager directly on Kamehameha School’s Garden Initiatives, internal policies, and draft policy guidelines to implement KS’s Aloha Aina Initiative;
  • Research food, agriculture, health, and other policies on school campuses as it relates to growing, composting, and preparing and presenting food grown on campus and/or in classroom/cafeteria;
  • Interview stakeholders, educational facilities/operations, and representatives from Federal and Hawaii Agencies (i.e. HDOA, USDA, HIDOE, DOH) to inform best practices, policies and procedures for guidelines;
  • Evaluate available education food policy guidelines for state of Hawaii and draft documents for consideration by stakeholders;
  • Prepare educational food policy presentations, summarizing model food policy for distribution on DOA website or other modes of distribution

Experience & Qualifications

  • One year of law school or higher education program or equivalent experience in food policy, policy development, legislative process, food handling guidelines and/or DOA or DOH;
  • Experience or significant interest in Native Hawaiian policy;
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills. Ability to present research clearly and effectively and speak with diverse stakeholders on behalf of the organizations;
  • Ability to take initiative and work independently;
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment with accuracy, detail and professionalism;
  • Detail-oriented project planning and implementation skills;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; team orientation;
  • Excellent organizational skills;
  • Evidence of commitment to food policy, food handling and/or legislative processes.

Working Specifics

  • Flexible Hours and flexible compensation arrangement
  • May be used towards law school internship hours;
  • Up to $5,000/stipend March 1 st -June 30th;
  • Potential opportunity for externship with State of Hawaii DOA Farm to School Program;
  • Part time, 15-19 hours/week
