Position Duties

Position term will be from March – August 22, 2016. The Mana Plain Wetland Restoration Project is located near sea level on the west side of Kauaʻi. DLNR/DOFAW is in the process of restoring approximately 150 acres of wetland habitat in the area. The climate of the job sight is hot and dry. Terrain in the area can be uneven and muddy. Work areas are occasionally accessed by kayak.

Potential candidates should be comfortable working outdoors and around water. A general knowledge of Hawaiian flora and fauna is helpful.

Interns will also assist other DOFAW programs including but not limited to game (hunting), trails, seabird, Nēnē and forest birds. In the event of wildfires, interns will be asked to support the logistical team.

Applicant will be performing various labor intensive tasks which include:

  • invasive plant removal
  • native plant seed collection
  • outplanting
  • predator control
  • bird and nest surveys
  • water quality monitoring
  • taking photopoints

Position Requirements

In order to be considered for hire, one must meet the following minimum requirements:

  • must be at least 17 years of age by October 3rd, 2015 (due to AmeriCorps regulations).
  • must have a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • must be one of the following: a US Citizen, US National, or Lawful Permanent Resident Alien (due to AmeriCorps regulations).
  • applicants are subject to a background check.
  • must have their own personal housing and transportation arrangements on-island.
  • due to the nature of this program, the physical and behavioral demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
    • Able to work extended hours on steep, rugged terrain; under extreme hot and cold weather condition
    • Able to hike long distances carrying a 20 lbs. backpack
    • Able to lift 30+ lbs., and operate basic hand tools (machetes, shovels, picks, etc.)
    • Able to work and camp in remote locations with minimal facilities
    • Able to work closely, interact according to Kupu’s core values and expectations, and camp with agency field crews for consecutive days and weeks

*Living allowances are subject to taxes and are paid bi-weekly over eleven months. Should, in special cases, the position last less than eleven months, the living allowance will be prorated appropriately. Living allowances are awarded at the above stated amount and are not dependent on hours worked
