Mālama Maunalua is seeking a Huki Coordinator Intern to assist the Habitat Restoration Coordinator with leading the community in restoring the health of Maunalua Bay. Under the Huki Program (huki means ‘to pull’ in Hawaiian), community groups come together to remove large quantities of invasive alien algae from Maunalua Bay using designated 10 x 10 m plots. This position will be responsible for assisting in pre-assessments of plot areas, helping volunteers in the removal of invasive alien algae, and setting up and disassembling plots. Half of the time will be spent in the office organizing volunteer waivers and inputting information into a Giftworks database.
Tasks and Responsibilities
- Attend all scheduled huki events. Some events may be on Saturdays. For an updated schedule of huki events, visit the event calendar.
- Interact and engage with the volunteer groups.
- Help set up designated plots, using ropes and bricks with buoys attached.
- Conduct pre-assessments of the designated plots using a quadrat sampling method to determine the distribution of invasive alien algae.
- Organize volunteer waivers for each huki event.
- Input information from waivers into a database called Giftworks.
Qualifications
- Undergraduate completing their BA/BS in a science field.
Working Conditions
- May have to work in variable weather conditions.
- Some strenuous work is involved in carrying equipment for huki events.
Internship Period
- Flexible. 8-10 weeks at 20-30 hours per week.
- May also have to work some Saturdays for huki events.
- Immediate start date.
