The Army’s natural resources program on O‘ahu is pleased to offer paid internship positions starting in June 2020.  The internship program will run from June 1-August 20, 2020.  Three types of paid summer internships will be offered: Field Crew Internships (4 interns); a Horticulture Internship (1 intern); and an Animal Program Internship (1 intern). These 12-week, 40-hour per week internships will provide individuals with the opportunity to work in and preserve some of O‘ahu's most pristine native ecosystems, while learning techniques and skills essential to the field of natural resource conservation in Hawai‘i. Field work for the internship may include, but is not limited to: invasive weed control; rare plant re-introduction and monitoring; rare bird and invertebrate monitoring; ungulate and rodent monitoring and control; maintenance/plant care in our rare plant facilities; and fence maintenance. Work may involve hiking up to ten (10) miles per day along steep, rugged terrain through thick brush and camping in remote areas under inclement weather conditions, for up to four (4) consecutive days. Weed control work may include the use of herbicide. Applicants must be able to work the entire 12-week internship period, with a work week consisting of four, ten-hour days (7:00 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.), Mondays through Thursdays. Interns must also be available to participate in overnight (3 nights, 4 days) camping trips with the program as part of their work week, which can take place 2-3 times monthly. Along with acquiring valuable natural resource management skills and experience, each individual will be compensated for the 12-week internship at a rate of $14.50 an hour. The OANRP office is located on the U.S. Army Installation at Schofield Barracks, O‘ahu. Applicants are responsible for providing their own transportation to and from the OANRP office. Food and lodging are not provided. This internship does not qualify for an international work visa.

Qualification Information for All Internship Positions
Qualified internship applicants will be chosen based on demonstrated interest in protecting the natural environment in Hawai‘i, particularly native forest resources. Applicants must be 18 years or older. A commitment to higher education, in fields related to the management of terrestrial resources is desirable. No prior experience is necessary; however, the internship program is based on outdoor field work and will be physically demanding. A positive attitude, interest in learning, physical ability and desire to work on outdoor projects will also be important.

Successful applicants will be hired as temporary, full-time, RCUH non-civil service employees with the Office of  the Vice President for Research and Innovation (OVPRI) performing project tasks on land managed by the U. S. Army Garrison, Hawai‘i, Directorate of Public Works (Environmental Office, Natural Resources Section) on O‘ahu. Housing, meals, transportation to and from work, and benefits are NOT provided.
