Native Fishery Observer Program
Internship
We are currently recruiting for a new cohort of observer trainees to participate in the July 27 - August 14, 2015 Native Fishery Observer Program training course. This training is non-paid, and will be limited to eight participants. Upon completion of this training, applicants will still need to interview for acceptance into the federal Certification Course (August 24 - September 14, 2015). Successful completion of both courses is required before an offer of employment.
The observer program is responsible for fielding longline observers to obtain data on incidental sea turtle take and collect fishing effort data. The data collected by observers includes basic biological information from target & non-target species, catch & discard rates, fishing gear descriptions, catch & interaction rates of sea turtles, seabirds and marine mammals, sightings of protected species and the collection of samples & specimens from selected species.
