SUMMARY OF DUTIES
Full-time Americorps/Kupu internship positions with the Oahu NARS through the Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW) Native Ecosystem Protection and Management (NEPM) Program, based in Pearl City, HI 2551 Waimano Home road.
Conducts field operations within a broad spectrum of conservation management objectives related to the protection and management of native ecosystems on the Island of Oahu. Work is conducted within the Oahu NARS as well as other DOFAW managed lands. Work involves, but is not limited to, invasive plant removal (manual and chemical) and monitoring, assisting with community outreach, native seed collection, plant propagation, out-planting, endangered species surveying and monitoring, ungulate and small rodent trapping, trail clearing and maintenance, GPS collection and data entry. Also maintains project vehicles and equipment and adheres to herbicide application/safety guidelines and project protocol for preventing spread of weed propagules.
Work environment is in remote mountainous conditions. Helicopter travel necessary for some remote sites. Long irregular hours may be required. Hours are typically from 8am to 4:30pm, but the successful applicant must be able to work flexible hours, including some evenings and weekends and be able to camp (up to 4 days). Fieldwork conducted in dense vegetation, steep terrain and often under difficult conditions (heat, rain, winds, bugs, poor footing ect). Fieldwork may involve elevation changes up to 4,500 feet in a day. Most field work is conducted in natural areas requiring cross country travel (without trails) and in steep terrain. Ability to hike up to 10 miles on irregular terrain with backpacks weighing up to 40lbs.
