About Mālama Maunalua:
Located in Maunalua Bay on the south-east shores of O‘ahu, Hawai‘i, Mālama Maunalua (MM) is a community-based non-profit organization that strives to restore the environmental health of Maunalua Bay through habitat restoration, science and planning, and education and outreach. In the years since its founding, MM has found great success in leading restoration efforts, education initiatives, and spearheading new research. It has removed over 4 million pounds of invasive algae, hosted over 32,000 volunteers, educated tens of thousands of keiki, built multiple rain gardens, and launched numerous water quality and benthic habitat studies. MM is a leading organization in building partnerships to address the many challenges confronting our environment. Moving forward, MM is working on numerous cutting-edge projects, from planting climate-resilient coral, to transplanting native algae, to restoring native forests.
About the Internship:
This internship program is ideal for students who wish to gain hands-on experience conducting research in the field. Interns will be responsible for selecting one of several available MM projects that they will lead as researchers under a supervising staff member or developing their own management proposal and plan. Interns will also have the opportunity to participate in core volunteer events, educational enrichment activities, including field site visits with partnering organizations and academic and professional development workshops.
Intern Expectations:
● Hours are flexible but a commitment of 20 hours/week is standard with some weekend work required
● Interns must be able to lift and carry 50lbs and work in hot/humid outdoor environments for 5-8 hours a day
● A positive attitude and strong communication skills are a must
● The completion of all fieldwork, presentations and final report and products is required
● It is highly recommended that interns are able to provide their own form of transportation to and from the field and office, but public transportation services such as the city bus, are also options
