2024 Paid Summer Internships - Horticulture and Rare Plant Propagation

Time Commitment |
- 12 weeks, from June 4– August 22, 2024
- 40 hours/week
- 10-hour workdays (Monday-Thursday 7:00 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.)

Typical Work Demands |
- Working in ANRPO rare plant nurseries and/or ANRPO seed lab
- Nursery work will include: Bending, stooping, crouching, standing for long periods and lifting loads up to 50 pounds
- Seed lab work will include: indoor detail oriented tasks and the use of laboratory tools

Examples of Internship Duties |
- Assisting in the propagation and maintenance of native Hawaiian plants, including rare, threatened and endangered species
- Nursery: greenhouse maintenance; controlling plant pathogens and insect pests (will include the use of pesticides); conducting weed and rat abatement activities; assisting with accurate nursery record keeping
- Seed lab: seed processing; seedling care; plating and up-potting seedlings; seed counts and assisting with accurate record keeping
- Occasional duties:
- Invasive weed control (may include use of herbicide), rare plant reintroduction and monitoring, rare bird and invertebrate monitoring, ungulate and rodent monitoring and control, fence maintenance (These duties may require hiking up to ten (10) miles per day along steep, rugged terrain through thick brush, as well as working/camping (overnight for up to four (4) consecutive days) in remote forest areas under inclement weather conditions.)

Intern must provide own: |
- Transportation to and from ANRPO baseyard at Schofield Barracks*
- Food and lodging
- Valid Driver’s License (required to obtain a Schofield Installation Access Pass)*
