University of Hawai'i at Mānoa
Introduction:
This is an application to participate in a program called Our Project In Hawaii's Intertidal (OPIHI), which is being conducted by the University of Hawaii’s Curriculum Research & Development Group. OPIHI is a program that involves monitoring rocky intertidal areas in Hawai‘i. You will
1) learn about the intertidal ecosystem
2) be trained in species identification and ecological sampling techniques
3) collect intertidal data
4) complete a research project
5) gain 3 credits for the Marine Option Program, 4 credits for Biology (499 UHM),
3 credit for NREM (492 UHM), or 3-4 credits from your home department (depending on University policies)
Scientific Purpose:
OPIHI is a program that surveys intertidal and coastal areas in Hawai‘i. You will work with scientists and other students to engage in the entire scientific process—from writing a proposal to collecting data to sharing your findings. You will participate in multiple projects focused on Hawaii’s intertidal and coastal systems. Past projects have included ecology-based work across O‘ahu on subjects such as invasive algal communities, feeding dynamics in fishponds, and crustacean population baseline surveys.
Educational Purpose:
The educational purpose of this program is to investigate how undergraduates learn about science. If you participate in the optional educational research portion of this project you will be asked to complete surveys and participate in an interview.
Participation Details:
Only a limited number of applicants will be chosen to participate in this program. If selected, you will be expected to complete all program requirements, including signing up for 3–4 research credits in Spring 2020. Participants will also earn a stipend ($750).
Requirements:
1) Applicants need to have taken at least 24 college-level credits by August 2019.
2) This is a 2 semester internship starting Fall 2019 and ending in Spring 2020. Students must be able to fulfill these credit requirements in Spring 2020:
- Marine Option Program (MOP)-track students: 3 research credits
- 499 BIOL students: 4 research credits
- 492 NREM students: 3 research credits
- Or 3-4 equivalent independent research credits in student’s home
department
3) Attend all internship in-person meetings (~bi-weekly Tuesday evening meetings 5–7:30 pm plus select weekends for field work—TBD based on tides and weather). Homework is minimal, but writing a proposal (Fall semester) and the final report and presentation (Spring semester) are large portions of required coursework.
