Wailuku and Makawao
AVAILABILITY:
There are 5 positions on Maui with the National Park Service at Haleakalā. One team leader (must be 21 years of age or older with a clean driver’s abstract) and up to 4 team members.
PROGRAM DATES:
June 10 – August 2, 2019 (8 weeks)
POSITION DUTIES:
Cultural Resource Management, 1 position: The member will assist with museum tasks and projects such as inventorying, digitizing, and rehousing museum collections. Member will learn proper museum techniques for handling of museum collections. Specifically, the Member will implement a project renaming, entering information, and creating a finding aid for the park's historic photo collection. The Member will also help to digitize the park's entomology and archeological collections. The Member will also help with creating exhibits for the Park Visitor Centers and giving talks on the museum collection. The Member will help with processing the rocks that are returned to the park. Member may also participate on archeological inventory and monitoring service.
Required: Anyone interested in museum collections and historical records. The applicant must be willing to serve in this capacity indoors and be able to handle repetitive tasks. Has the ability to pay attention to detail and can follow instructions. Ability to serve in a variety of field conditions including hiking in rough terrain, steep cliffs and inclement weather conditions. Must be able to camp in remote locations in co-ed situations. The member will be expected to maintain a daily journal and prepare a final presentation.
Visitor/Resources Protection, 2 positions (Preventative Search and Rescue/Search and Rescue/Backcountry Patrol): The member will learn about Search and Rescue in Haleakalā National Park and service proactively to prevent Search and Rescue cases from occurring. They will serve within the Division of Visitor and Resource Protection, ensuring that visitors to the backcountry are properly equipped, and prepared for arduous hiking at high elevations. With Visitor and Resource Protection Rangers, the member will respond and assist with medical emergencies and Search and Rescue cases. The member will also serve to educate the public on the importance of protecting the parks unique resources. The member must be physically able to hike over rough terrain at high elevation for multiple hours and participate in multi-day trips on Maui. The member must have a valid driver’s license, and may be required to drive government vehicles. The member must be 19 years and older by the program start date. He/she must also be willing to participate in multi-day trips in the Haleakalā Wilderness. He/she will be expected to maintain accurate daily records of their service, maintain a daily journal, and prepare a final presentation.
Interpretation, 1 position: The member will help staff visitor center(s), answer visitor questions, serve at contact stations using tools to help visitors connect with the park resources, and other related duties. He/she must be outgoing, interested and skilled in serving the public and children. The member must be able and willing to hike daily over rough and uneven terrain and participate in multi-day trips and backcountry trips on Maui. The member will be expected to maintain a daily journal and prepare a final presentation.
Team Leader, 1 position: The Team Leader will participate in, lead and mentor team members, and help coordinate service projects for college level team members and high school level team members. He/she should have strong organizational skills and an interest in natural resources stewardship and management and environmental education. The Team Leader will be expected to track member attendance and performance and other related duties as well as maintain a daily journal and prepare a final presentation. The Team Leader must be willing and able to transport members safely to and from the Park and between out-of-Park service locations using a seven-fifteen passenger van. He/she must be able to hike over rough and uneven terrain and participate in multi-day trips on Maui. Applicants must be able to meet driving abstract requirements and must be at least 21 years old by the start of the program.
Other duties may include those that are assigned by your site manager or supervisor.
You may receive training in the following:
• Orientation to the NPS and Haleakalā National Park
• Orientation to park staff and park areas (summit, wilderness, Kīpahulu as appropriate) • First aid/CPR/AED Training
• Park Safety Training • Ethics & IT Security Training
• Training in predator control methods & endangered species monitoring
• Other training as needed for position.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
Haleakalā National Park extends from sea level to 10,023 feet. The summit area of the park receives anywhere from 40 to 150 inches of rain each year with the coastal area of Kīpahulu receiving over 80 inches. Temperatures at the summit can range between 30 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit at any time of the year. Service will be performed outside and weather can range from hot and sunny, to cold, wet, and windy. Weather changes rapidly, and members need to be prepared for any type of weather at any time of year. This position is predominantly an outdoor position. Members must not be afraid of heights. Position requires a great amount of physical exertion at times and must be able to traverse irregular terrain with up to 30 pounds of gear for distances of 3 miles or more. Backcountry duties include hiking to and from remote camps/base with backpacks up to 40 pounds over 3 -12 miles. Elevational differences in service learning areas may range up to 3,300 feet per day. Most of the field areas are solitary with occasional interaction with other park staff.
Office requires completing duties in a crowded environment.
Members will be provided with t-shirts. Raingear and other outerwear will be provided as needed. Members are required to wear closed-toed shoes at all times (including in the office).
Members will need to provide transportation to the pick-up site to Haleakalā National Park. Pick up sites will be in Wailuku and Makawao.

*Living allowances are subject to taxes and are paid bi-weekly over eight weeks. Living allowances are awarded at the above stated amount and are not dependent on term of service hours.
APPLICANT REQUIREMENTS:
1. Age - Applicants must be at least 17 years old by June 10,2019 for members, 19 years old by June 10, 2019 for Visitor/Resource Protection position, and 21 years old by June 10, 2019 for team leader.
2. Diploma – Applicants must have a high school diploma or equivalent, or working towards one.
3. Citizenship - Applicants must be one of the following: a US Citizen, US National, or Lawful Permanent Resident Alien (due to AmeriCorps regulations), and provide additional documentation as required
4. Criminal History Check – Applicants are subject to a criminal history check.
5. Housing/Transportation - Applicants must have their own personal housing and transportation arrangements on-island.
