Freestone Environmental Services, Inc., (www.gofreestone.com) a multi-disciplinary consulting firm and contractor to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), seeks a Pacific Islands Regional Marine Debris Communication and Outreach Coordinator for the Office of Response and Restoration (ORR). This individual will be located in Honolulu, Hawaii and work with NOAA’s Marine Debris Program (MDP), which is located in NOAA’s Silver Spring, Maryland offices.

ORR (www.response.restoration.noaa.gov) is a program office in the National Ocean Service that responds to threats in order to protect and restore coastal resources. To do this ORR provides interdisciplinary scientific response to releases of oil, chemicals, contaminants, and marine debris, and protects and restores NOAA trust resources. MDP (https://marinedebris.noaa.gov/), a Division within OR&R, focuses on the prevention, removal, and research of marine debris.

Core Responsibilities

  • Develop, plan, coordinate and conduct outreach, education and public relations activities with the public, school groups and industry partners focused on the prevention and mitigation of marine debris.
  • Support the planning and implementation of the interagency Hawaii Marine Debris Action Plan by assisting in regular communication with partners and setting up meetings and workshops as needed.
  • Provide support to the Pacific Islands Regional Coordinator on marine debris related projects, activities, and actions in the Pacific Islands.
  • Support the MDP Communications team with National outreach and communication activities, including preparation of presentation and outreach documents, formatting reports, copy editing documents, graphic design and supporting education and media efforts.
  • Support the West Coast Regional Coordinators with outreach and communication activities, including preparation and review of presentations, outreach materials, and reports.
  • Provide support and assistance for emergency marine debris events in the Pacific Islands.
  • Seek opportunities to collaborate with other NOAA offices in the region on marine debris activities.
  • Provide other assistance to MDP as needed.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s in education, biology, or environmental science related field, and at least four years of experience in the field. A Master’s degree is desired, but not required.
  • Strong communication skills both verbal and writing. Copy editing experience is desired.
  • Strong computer and analytical skills.
  • Experience working on interdisciplinary teams as well as independently.
  • Experience working in the Pacific Islands or with partners in the region is preferred.
  • Experience with project management.
