Hiring Unit: College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources

Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Provide programmatic outreach support to project directors of the Area-wide IPM for Coffee Berry Borer Control in Hawaii Project.
  2. Develop an extension program in support of coffee producers for coffee berry borer integrated pest management, that will identify issues and implement extension methods and techniques in collaboration and partnership with private and public stakeholders, for the island of Hawai‘i, and may include some statewide responsibilities. Serve as liaison between industry members and organizations, government agencies and private companies/individuals.
  3. Assist with the coordination and organization of Coffee Berry Borer research and outreach by communicating and collaborating with agencies and personnel involved in the Area-wide IPM for Coffee Berry Borer Control in Hawaii Project.
  4. Provide information using various means such as workshop and training development materials, presentations, exhibits, on-farm demonstrations, and publish scholarly information that address industry needs through appropriate media methods such as hard copy publications, web-based publications, social media and other communication and media alternatives.
  5. Provide small group and one-on-one consultation with producers and stakeholders, including farm visits.
  6. Obtain local, regional, and national funding to establish a nationally recognized program.
  7. Participate as needed in Department, College, and University service and governance.
  8. Attend industry meetings and work with stakeholders may involve some meetings that occur after normal working hours and/or weekends at off-site locations.
Minimum Qualifications
  1. Bachelor’s degree from a college or university of recognized standing with major coursework in entomology, plant pathology, agriculture or a related field.
  2. Ability to apply Extension teaching methods.
  3. Ability to travel independently to various geographical locations in a timely manner. Requirement may be fulfilled by a valid Hawaii Driver’s License (class 3), comparable driver’s license, or other means of transportation which meets position needs.
Desirable Qualifications
  1. Ability to speak and/or read Spanish.
  2. Knowledge of coffee and coffee berry borer integrated pest management.
  3. Familiarity and good rapport with agricultural organizations, particularly with coffee and ag-related government agencies.
  4. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively through oral, written and visual channels, using traditional educational tools.
  5. Demonstrated ability to obtain external funding or other in-kind program resources.
  6. Experience with developing education materials for websites and using social media such as Facebook, twitter, and YouTube for educational purposes.
