Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), O¿ahu Invasive Species Committee (OISC), located in Kailua, O¿ahu.  Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. 

MINIMUM MONTHLY SALARY:  $3,600/Mon. 

DUTIES:  Supervises, trains, and works in the field with a field crew to target invasive alien plant and/or animal species for control or eradication on O¿ahu.  Assists OISC Field Operations Manager with scheduling and implementing field work including helicopter operations. Plans site control strategies, makes contact with residents at targeted locations, and leads the crew’s control efforts.  Public or residential contact will be required to schedule access and to maintain positive relations with landowners.  Uses hand tools and portable pesticide applicators in field control efforts.   Keeps precise daily records of all field efforts.  Prepares progress reports and submits all data and findings in a timely fashion.  Ensures strict adherence by entire field crew team to established protocols for preventing the spread of invasive species.  Follows and adheres to all safety and operational guidelines and ensures crew compliance.  Tracks inventory, supplies and equipment needs, and maintains equipment used.  Ensures field data is correctly uploaded to spatial and relational databases in a timely fashion. Conducts evaluations of subordinates. 

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING:  Associate’s Degree from an accredited community college or at least two (2) years (achieved at least 48 credit hours) of college-level coursework.  EXPERIENCE:  Two to four (2-4) years of experience in field activities related to invasive species control and/or natural resources management. One to two (1-2) years leadership or supervisory experience.  Must have prior supervision or leadership experience over paid staff and attendance in supervisory training programs.  Experience working in and around helicopters.  ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS:  Knowledge of Hawaiian biota and threats from incipient alien plant and animal invasions in Hawai‘i.  Knowledge of field techniques to control alien species, including use of pesticides.  Ability to read and navigate with topographic maps, state Tax Map Keys (TMKs), and aerial photographs.  Ability to use a compass, altimeter, GPS unit, and other navigational tools.  Ability to write clear and concise reports.  Ability to train others. Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly both orally and in writing. Ability to work with small mechanized equipment.  Computer literacy.  Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Must be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle with manual transmission.  Post Offer/Employment Conditions: Must be able to pass a post offer criminal background check.  Must be able to complete basic helicopter safety (A100) course within twelve (12) months of hire. Must be able to obtain and maintain State of Hawai‘i Certification for Application of Restricted Use Pesticides within twelve (12) months from date of hire and maintain throughout duration of employment. Must complete the online Hazard Communication training immediately after hire or no later than employee’s initial exposure to hazardous chemicals. Must possess the American Red Cross Certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain and maintain the certificate following the training provided within three (3) months from date of hire) and maintain throughout duration of employment.  If selected for use of chainsaws, must submit chainsaw training certification to PCSU prior to activity.  If selected for rappelling duties, must submit rappelling training certification to PCSU prior to activity.  PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS:  Able to work outdoors on extremely rough terrain and under adverse weather conditions.  Able to lift and carry fifty (50) pounds unassisted.  Must not be acrophobic (afraid of heights). POLICY AND/OR REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS:  As a condition of employment, employee will be subject to all applicable RCUH policies and procedures and, as applicable, subject to University of Hawai‘i's and/or business entity's policies and procedures.  Violation of RCUH's, UH's, or business entity's policies and/or procedures or applicable State or Federal laws and/or regulations may lead to disciplinary action (including, but not limited to possible termination of employment, personal fines, civil and/or criminal penalties, etc.). 

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:  Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Biology, Botany, Resource Management, and Environmental Studies or a related field. Experience with control of invasive species in Hawai‘i and with pesticides and specific knowledge of Hawaiian flora and fauna. Ability to use Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and databases to organize and analyze spatial data.
