Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), located at Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park on the island of Hawai‘i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.
MINIMUM MONTHLY SALARY: $2,372/Mon.
DUTIES: Creates and maintains geodatabases to track invasive plant control and management activities. In Geographic Information System (GIS), analyzes efficacy of management activities and evaluates alternative strategies to improve control outcomes. Leads Global Positioning System (GPS) and field mapping training for field crews, and creates a variety of geospatial products including mobile field maps and georeferenced Portable Document Format (PDF) maps to guide invasive plant survey and control operations, and forest pathogen mapping and management. Employee works independently conducting field surveys along existing transects, roads, trails and establishes new transects in remote areas to map invasive plant and forest pathogen distributions.
PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING: Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Geography, GIS, or Natural Resources. EXPERIENCE: At least one (1) year of experience using GIS and database programs to map natural resources or infrastructure, manage complex datasets, and produce analytic maps and reports. Experience with image analysis and pictometry. Experience collecting tree health data and mapping forest pathogens. ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS: Working knowledge of large format printers and plotters. Knowledge of GIS programs, ArcGIS, and spreadsheets and database programs. Basic knowledge of native Hawaiian and invasive flora. Knowledge of general methods involved in gathering and recording field data for research and management projects. Knowledge of forest pathogen sampling and analysis techniques. Ability to navigate with map and compass; to work alone in remote situations; to communicate well orally and in writing with supervisor and coworkers; and to accurately record biological data. Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Post-Offer Employment Conditions: Must possess the American Red Cross Certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain and maintain the certificate following the training provided within three (3) months from date of hire) and maintain throughout duration of employment. Must be able to complete pesticide safety course within twelve (12) months from date of hire. Must complete the online Hazard Communication training immediately after hire or no later than employee’s initial exposure to hazardous chemicals. PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS: Able to hike and camp in remote areas and rugged terrain under inclement weather conditions. Able to backpack, lift and carry up to forty (40) pounds unassisted. SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS: Field experience working in Hawaiian Ecosystems. Experience gathering data and navigating with a Global Positioning System (GPS); experience collecting forest health and pathogen data, and experience with invasive plant control.
