Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo (UHH), located in Hilo, Hawai‘i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.
MINIMUM MONTHLY SALARY: $2,372/Mon.
DUTIES: Supports collaborative research projects related to forest restoration of degraded habitats on Hawai‘i Island. Performs routine measurements of forest restoration research plots, using established protocols and methods. Collects seeds in the field and works in the greenhouse to maintain and grow research plants. Assists with the collection of plant material and soil in research plots and helps with laboratory procedures following established protocols for extraction of nutrients. Supports ongoing data collection and deployment and maintenance of environmental sensors for research projects. Conducts all work as part of collaborative projects with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service, Institute of Pacific Islands Forestry and UHH Biology.
PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING: Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Ecology, Biology, Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management, Geography, or a related field. EXPERIENCE: At least six (6) months of experience in natural resources research. Experience with data entry and manipulation, and basic laboratory techniques. ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS: Knowledge of the principles of botany and ecology, general methods involved in gathering and recording field data for research and management projects (including the use of computers to download data under field conditions), the ecology of Hawaiian forests, and the basic principles of field research, including ability to assess readings and measurements taken, tests executed, observations made, work completed, samples collected, etc. Strong field skills in forest mensuration. Ability to use advanced functions in Microsoft Excel. Skilled in sample collection, data quality control, and managing complex equipment in the field and lab. Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Must be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle with manual transmission. PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS: Able to hike over difficult terrain for prolonged periods of time. Able to lift and carry heavy equipment weighing up to fifty (50) pounds unassisted. SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS: Experience with forest research techniques and protocols. Knowledge of Hawaiian flora.
