Plans, organizes and directs, with full technical and administrative responsibility, the overall operations and activities of the Honolulu Zoo; serves as principal technical specialist and advisor to City officials on matters pertaining to zoo operations and activities; and performs other related duties as required.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENT:
Equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with major work in zoology or a related field. Work experience may be substituted for a bachelor's degree on a year-for-year basis. Such experience must have provided the knowledge, skills, and analytical ability normally gained from attainment of a bachelor's degree.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:
Five years of professional experience in the care and exhibition of a wide variety of zoo animals, three of which shall have been in an administrative capacity at a large metropolitan zoo.

Quality of Experience: Having the required number of years of experience will not in itself be accepted as qualifying for the position. Candidates' overall experience must have been of such scope and responsibility as to conclusively demonstrate the ability to perform the duties of the position. Such experience must have demonstrated the knowledge of zoo management practices and operations involving the care and exhibition of a wide variety of different species of mammals, birds and reptiles; zoo philosophy and zoo education techniques; classification of animals and their world distribution; requirements for feeding, housing, caring and propagating a wide variety of zoo animals; zoo animal exhibition requirements, including considerations for public safety, animal comfort, and natural habitats; sources of information for the acquisition and trading of zoo animals; laws, rules and regulations governing the importation and exportation of animals; budget preparation procedures and requirements; principles and practices of supervision and administration; report writing and the ability to plan, organize and direct the operations of a zoo, including future zoo development and expansion; develop and administer zoo regulations and policies; supervise zoo staff and volunteers; plan and design facilities, visitor circulation patterns and pathways, and landscaping projects; plan, develop and coordinate public relations and education programs and activities to create community interest, awareness and involvement; work with and utilize news media to promote zoo programs and activities; research and adapt information regarding the operations of other zoos and trends in zoo planning and management; establish and maintain close and effective working relationships with public and private agencies and organizations, as well as other governmental jurisdictions; deal tactfully and effectively with the general public; prepare budget estimates; prepare clear and concise reports and correspondence.

License Requirement: Valid driver's license (Type 3 or equivalent), prior to appointment.
