Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Hawai‘i Institute of Geophysics and Planetology (HIGP), Center for the Study of Active Volcanoes (CSAV), U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO), Mauna Loa project, located in Volcano, Hawai‘i.  Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. 

MINIMUM MONTHLY SALARY:  $2,372/Mon. 

DUTIES:  Performs GIS data entry, map generation, metadata generation and editing, and geospatial data analysis using ArcGIS software.  Performs digital media archive maintenance and metadata generation. Prepares captions for field photographs, maps, and videos.  Organizes and manages lava and geologic sample archive and submits for analysis.  Supervises volunteer and intern project activities and support functions. Oversees and leads field support assistants as required during field exercises.  Assists with field observations, flow mapping, sampling, and photographic documentation. 

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING:  Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Geography, Earth Sciences, or related fields.  EXPERIENCE:  At least two (2) years of post-graduate professional experience working in a field relevant to college/university training.  ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS:  Professional knowledge of ArcGIS software and working knowledge of ModelBuilder on PC platforms.  Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, Adobe, and digital cameras. Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Must be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle with manual transmission. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to pass USGS aviation, safety, and information technology training.  PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS:  Must be able to walk long distances over rough terrain near active lava flows and vents while carrying a pack of up to forty (40) pounds. Must be able to pass a spirometry test to demonstrate lung function sufficient to safely work at high elevations or to safely work while using respirator during adverse air quality conditions. POLICY AND/OR REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS:  As a condition of employment, employee will be subject to all applicable RCUH policies and procedures and, as applicable, subject to University of Hawai‘i's and/or business entity's policies and procedures.  Violation of RCUH's, UH's, or business entity's policies and/or procedures or applicable State or Federal laws and/or regulations may lead to disciplinary action (including, but not limited to possible termination of employment, personal fines, civil and/or criminal penalties, etc.). 

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:  Experience with operation of 4-wheel drive vehicles on unimproved roads. Experience in setting up remote camps and wilderness living for periods of up to five days. Familiarity with lava flow morphology and mineralogy of basaltic lavas.
