AUWAHI FOREST RESTORATION PROJECT TECHNICIAN – ID# 17037. 

 

Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit.  Regular, Part-Time (50% FTE), RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), Auwahi Forest Restoration Project (AFRP), located in `Ulupalakua, Maui, Hawai‘i.  Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. 

 

MONTHLY SALARY RANGE:  $1,186-$1,533.33/Mon. (@ 50% FTE). 

 

DUTIES:  Assists in management, restoration, outreach, and applied research projects of restoration of Auwahi dryland forest on Haleakala volcano.  Participates in land management and restoration activities in AFRP’s forest restoration exclosures through out-planting native plants, controlling non-native plants by mechanical and chemical means, and assisting in determining and maintaining fence lines.  Regularly maintains field equipment, tools and vehicles and tracks supplies and equipment inventory.  Assists in the management of volunteer activities, organizes supplies, and coordinates and executes safe volunteer trips, which may involve collecting and cleaning seeds, planting seeds and seedlings, applying pesticides, fertilizing, weeding, collecting data, and constructing and maintaining fences.  Assists in writing and editing text and preparing grant proposals, scientific manuscripts, and other technical reports.  Prepares maps with ArcView and Global Positioning System (GPS).  Assists in developing outreach and education materials and website design and implementation.  Assists in development and implementation of applied research of forest restoration research and monitoring sites, collects and inputs data, and assists with data analysis. 

 

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING:  Associate’s Degree from an accredited community college with coursework in Natural Resource Management and/or Conservation Biology.  EXPERIENCE:  One to three (1-3) years of experience conducting conservation and/restoration in natural areas in Hawai’i, including experience in conducting volunteer trips in outdoor settings.  ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS:  Good working knowledge of Hawaiian natural history, general botanical principles, and Hawaiian culture including ethnobotany. Good knowledge of Hawaiian flora, especially native and priority invasive plants of Hawaiian dry forests.  Able to identify by sight most native and non-native plant species of Hawaiian dry forests. Good knowledge of basic experimental design and implementation. Abilities in standard vegetation technique (e.g. marking of plots and individuals, assessing of size class/height) and ability to accurately record observed values.  Ability to coordinate volunteers and events with large number of participants.  Ability to use computers, including word-processing and database software. Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to pass a post offer criminal background check.  Must possess Certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain and maintain the certificate following the training provided within three (3) months from date of hire and maintain throughout duration of employment).  Must be able to complete pesticide safety course within twelve (12) months from date of hire and maintain throughout duration of employment.  PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS:  Must be able to perform fieldwork in remote and potentially hazardous locations. Able to lift and carry up to thirty-five (35) pounds of equipment over rough terrain. SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:  Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university with coursework in Natural Resource Management, Conservation Biology and/or Restoration Ecology.  Experience with forest restoration on leeward Haleakala.  Good knowledge of ArcView software and GPS.
