Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Center for Conservation Research and Training (CCRT), Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR), Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW), located in Lihue, Kauai. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.
MINIMUM MONTHLY SALARY: $2,372/Month.
DUTIES: Assists the State Wildlife Biologist in the research, management, development, and maintenance projects on Kauai with primary emphasis on the West Kauai region. Program will focus on enhancing wildlife habitat, study, and census life history of birds and mammals. Records and compiles data provided by the hunting community. Assists with inputting data into spreadsheets and maintaining information for project reports and summaries. Manages and maintains hunter check station. Gives talks on wildlife programs.
PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING: High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent. EXPERIENCE: One to three (1-3) years of experience in Natural Resource Management or related area. (Work experience can be substituted with college classes related to natural resources. Work experience can include internships or volunteer work.). ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS: Knowledge of Hawaiian native plants and threats from alien species to native ecosystems. Knowledge of common plant species, game birds and mammals. Working knowledge of life histories of those wildlife species. Knowledge of invasive species removal. Knowledge of applicable rules and regulations and policies. Knowledge of monitoring and data collection. Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions. Ability to identify common native and introduced plants. Skilled in the use of simple hand and power tools and be familiar with operation of motorized equipment. Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Must be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle with manual transmission. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must possess Certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain and maintain the certificate following the training provided within twelve (12) months from date of hire and maintain throughout duration of employment). Must be able to complete chainsaw training within twelve (12) months of from date of hire. PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able and willing to physically perform, efficiently and effectively under strenuous outdoor conditions (e.g. extreme weather, mosquitoes, steep terrain, poor footing, etc.). Must be able to hike up to ten (10) miles on a daily basis. Ability to lift and carry up to fifty (50) pounds unassisted over uneven terrain. Ability to work irregular hours on occasion and at times, work alone. SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS: Associate’s Degree from an accredited community college in a science field. Mammal hunting experience. Previous field experience in an active resource or management program to protect ecosystems in Hawai‘i or elsewhere. Familiarity with Hawaiian forests and conservation issues.
