FIELD BIOLOGIST – ID# 17011. 

 

Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit.  Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), performing project tasks on land controlled by the U.S. Navy, located at the Pacific Missile Range Facility (PMRF), located in Kekaha, Kauai.  Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. 

 

MINIMUM MONTHLY SALARY:  $2,372/Mon. 

 

DUTIES:  Plans and implements wildlife predator control activities in support of the PMRF Natural Resources Program. Operates in up to four (4) management areas monitoring and controlling non-native predators. Duties include monitoring for the presence of various predators including barn owls, cats, rats, mice and feral pigs. Monitoring may also include the breeding success of endangered bird species to evaluate effectiveness of predator control activities. Performs basic construction tasks and simple maintenance on tools and vehicles.  Operates equipment such as Global Positioning Systems (GPS), handheld radios, cameras, etc. Operates 4-wheel drive (4WD) trucks or All-Terrain Vehicles.  Collects various data in the field and enters data into computer.  Assists in the preparation of simple maps and other tasks related to keeping accurate records of the field work accomplished.  Orders supplies and materials for field projects. Whenever possible, provides supplemental information on distribution and breeding success rates of endangered seabirds within the study areas and occasionally assists with seabird monitoring work if needed. 

 

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING:  Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Biological Sciences, Natural Resource Management, Wildlife Biology, or a related field.  EXPERIENCE:  At least one (1) year work experience in or related to managing natural resources.  Experience needs to be documented well and acquired under the employment of an academic institution, governmental agency, private company, or non-profit organization in the appropriate field.  ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS:  Basic knowledge of the natural history of native Hawaiian wildlife.  Basic familiarity with native Hawaiian ecosystems, native Hawaiian plants and wildlife. Familiarity with techniques used to inventory and monitor wildlife and other natural resource assets. Familiarity with techniques used to inventory and control non-native predators. Must be able to work well in a team setting, as well as work independently on tasks. Must be able to maintain a positive professional attitude in support of a productive work environment.  Must have good oral and written communication skills. Able to prepare a comprehensive work plan. Able to take good field notes and record biological data with a GPS.  Able to collect, organize, and manage a variety of field data.  Able to analyze data and present findings and recommendations in written report format.  Able to use word processing, database and spreadsheet programs. Must be able to meet requirements for use of firearms on base.  Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Must be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle with manual transmission. Post Offer/Employment Condition:  Must be able to pass a post-offer criminal background check for employment as a Navy Contractor.  Must be able to obtain and maintain National Rifle Association and State of Hawai‘i Hunter Safety Program firearms certification on an annual basis, and maintain throughout duration of employment. As a condition of employment, all certifications must be obtained and maintained as specified by the certificating agency. Failure to pass the initial or annual firearms recertification will be grounds for disqualification of employment or termination due to a failure to meet and maintain a job qualification. Must possess the American Red Cross Certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain and maintain the certificate following the training provided within three (3) months from date of hire) and maintain throughout duration of employment.  Must be able to complete pesticide safety course within twelve (12) months from date of hire and maintain throughout duration of employment. Must complete the online Hazard Communication training immediately after hire or no later than employee’s initial exposure to hazardous chemicals.  PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS:  Able to lift and carry up to fifty (50) pounds unassisted. Able and willing to conduct work under strenuous outdoor conditions (e.g. extreme weather, thick brush, steep terrain) on a secured military base. POLICY AND/OR REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS:  As a condition of employment, employee will be subject to all applicable RCUH policies and procedures and, as applicable, subject to University of Hawai‘i's and/or business entity's policies and procedures.  Violation of RCUH's, UH's, or business entity's policies and/or procedures or applicable State or Federal laws and/or regulations may lead to disciplinary action (including, but not limited to possible termination of employment, personal fines, civil and/or criminal penalties, etc.).  

 

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:  Field work with emphasis on predator control with a land management agency or a county, state, or federal program in Hawai‘i strongly preferred. Experience hunting birds using firearms, traps, and other prescribed methods.  Previous experience monitoring endangered Hawaiian seabirds. Experience in identification of native Hawaiian plants and animals and non-native plants.  Knowledge of Department of the Navy natural resources programs, and the policy, organizational contexts within which they are managed.
