Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources (CTAHR), Plant and Environmental Protection Sciences (PEPS), Coconut Rhinoceros Beetle (CRB) Eradication Project, located at the Hawai‘i Department of Agriculture (HDOA) on Oahu, Hawai‘i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.
MINIMUM MONTHLY SALARY: $2,552/Mon.
DUTIES: The P&EPS Outreach Specialist develops and maintains a positive public image for CRB operations; develops and implements a public education and outreach program to raise public awareness about CRB, other invasive species and to generate support for HDOA’s efforts to control them; acts as the primary contact for public inquiries; develops outreach materials, and manages the CRB website and electronic media; plans and makes presentations to community and school groups; communicates with public and private property owners and residents to obtain and maintain permission to conduct survey and control operations on public and private property; and plans and runs volunteer events.
PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING: Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university. EXPERIENCE: At least one (1) year of experience in the field of public outreach, environmental education, or similar type of position. (Experience may be substituted with one to two (1-2) years of related coursework. ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS: Must have demonstrable knowledge of Hawaiian biota and threats from invasive species. General knowledge of Biological Science, Entomology, and the natural and cultural history of Hawai‘i. Must have a good working knowledge of communication and outreach techniques and methods. Must possess excellent communication skills, including public speaking and writing skills, and excellent organizational and time management skills. Must have good computer skills, including use of presentation and desktop publishing software, and other electronic media use. Must possess a valid driver’s license and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to pass a post offer criminal background check. PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS: Able to lift and carry up to forty (40) pounds unassisted. SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS: Experience creating and conducting outreach programs for diverse audiences. Degree or significant coursework in natural resources management, conservation, biology, entomology, or similar field, and/or previous experience working in environmental outreach. Education or experience in education, journalism, marketing or related field. Possess creative skills and able to produce original types of media. Computer skills in databases, graphic design, and website management. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with media personnel regarding priorities and workload. Demonstrated ability to work effectively and accurately with high degree of independence.
