Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Islands Ecosystem Center’s Kilauea Field Station, Hawaii Cooperative Studies Unit (HCSU), located in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Hawaii. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.

Assists Project Leader in investigating the ecology, impacts, and control of vector-transmitted avian disease in the Pacific Basin. Duties include, but are not limited to: use of commercial kits to extract DNA from frozen blood and mosquito samples, Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) analysis of extracted DNA to diagnose hematozoan infections, preparation of PCR products for sequencing, PCR analysis of mosquito samples to detect and characterize genetic diversity of Wolbachia endosymbionts, use of light microscopes to diagnose infections with avian blood parasites from stained blood smears, serological analysis of plasma samples to detect antibodies to avian malaria, and maintenance and summarization of laboratory data for preparation of reports.
