Position Duties
This position is currently a full-time position (includes full health benefits). Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Provide leadership and direction for the Sustainability Initiative (SI) team
- Act as a member of Kupuʻs director team that helps to provide strategic and operational support to the Kupu Executive team
- Initiate and set goals for program according to the strategic initiatives of the organization
- Develop and manage budget for SI programs operations
- Prospect and develop new clients and funding opportunities for Sustainability Initiative program
- Build relationships with state and local agencies, organizations, and relevant community programs to encourage the integration of the Sustainability Initiatives Program and workforce development into sustainability projects taking place in the State
- Grow the Sustainability Initiatives Program by being creative, applying for private and public funding, and coming up with new ways to fund sustainability projects and interns. This can be done by grant-writing, fundraising, and other creative procurement approaches and non-profit development activities
- Provide regular review and adaptations to the SI programs’ business model
- Devise evaluation strategies to monitor performance and determine the need for improvements
- Oversee the record-keeping and analysis of program data that quantifies environmental, economic, and social results from the program and projects
- Further develop program protocols, professional development trainings, environmental trainings, and
- program materials through personal initiative
- Provide oversight and direction to the employees of the sustainability initiatives program in accordance with the organization's policies and procedures
- Coach, mentor and develop staff, including overseeing new employee onboarding and provide opportunities for ongoing training
- Empower employees to take responsibility for their jobs and goals. Delegate responsibility and expect accountability and regular feedback
- Foster a spirit of teamwork and unity among program managers that allows for disagreement over ideas, conflict and expeditious conflict resolution, and the appreciation of diversity as well as cohesiveness, supportiveness, and working effectively together to enable each employee and the department to succeed
- Consciously instills Kupu’s workplace culture that emphasizes the identified mission, vision, guiding principles, and core values of the organization as part of our operations
- Manage all contracts, negotiations, budgets, dashboards, and benchmarks for the program
- Other duties as assigned
Position Requirements
The Director of Sustainability Initiatives must meet the following minimum requirements:
- Available full-time Monday through Friday, as well as the odd weekend and/or evenings with possible out of state travel
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in a related field
- At Least 5 years of experience planning and managing programs and projects
- Have managed at least 3 years of management experience and contract management experience
- Detailed oriented

- Solve Problems: Assess problem situations to identify causes, gather and process relevant information, generate possible solutions, and make recommendations and/or resolve the problem
- Background or understanding of sustainability issues in Hawaii as well as a general understanding of key participants in the sustainability and green workforce movement
