Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa, Social Science Research Institute (SSRI), located in Honolulu, Hawai‘i. This position will be working at the Hawai‘i Institute of Marine Biology/Heeia Kea Small Boat Harbor in Kaneohe, and the Anuenue Fisheries Research Center in Sand Island, and other designated worksites on Oahu. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.
MINIMUM MONTHLY SALARY: $2,372/Mon.
DUTIES: Conducts multi-disciplinary coral reef monitoring surveys in Kaneohe Bay, Oahu, Hawai‘i, associated with habitat restoration activities. Assists with all operational phases of the program to support field research and monitoring activities that include planning, implementation, analysis, and reporting. Assists with invasive algae removal, native sea urchin outplaning and translocating, coral outplaning, fragmenting and re-attachment. Assists with monthly spawing of urchins. Collects and enters into databases: quality controls research and monitoring data. Prepares, maintains, operates, and troubleshoots research equipment including small boats and motors, scuba diving gear, handheld Global Positioning System (GPS) units, digital, still, and video cameras, and other scientific equipment needed for field operations. Performs multi-disciplinary underwater SCUBA and snorkel coral reef monitoring surveys using established methods. Assists with planning and scheduling field activities, procurement, design, fabrication, and maintenance of field gear.
PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING: Associate’s Degree from an accredited community college in Marine Science, Biological Science, Environmental Science, Oceanography, or other related field involving studies of coral reef ecosystems (two to three (2-3) years of college level coursework, including coursework in the Marine, Biological, Environmental or Oceanographic Sciences, or related field may substitute for an Associate’s Degree). EXPERIENCE: One to three (1-3) years of scientific research, marine fieldwork, and diving experience. One to three (1-3) years of experience trailering, launching, recovering, maintaining, and operating small vessels with outboard motors. One to three (1-3) years of computer experience using database and GIS software. ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS: Working knowledge of Hawaiian and Indo-Pacific marine life and aquatic invasive species. Demonstrated competence with benthic digital image analysis software and basic data entry programs such as Microsoft Excel and Access. Some experience with basic GIS programs and photo-editing and graphics programs. Working knowledge of commonly used underwater scientific survey techniques such as belt transect, line point intercept, quad point intercept, digital photoquadrat, rugosity measurement, and other established survey methodologies. Able to operate small boats and perform outboard motor maintenance and repair. Must be SCUBA certified (NAUI, PADI, etc.) and meet the standards established by the DAR’s diver certification process (which meets the standards set by the Occupational Safety & Health Administration) and hold current certifications in CPR, First Aid, and Emergency Oxygen Administration. Must possess good snorkeling and free diving skills and maintain throughout duration of employment. Must possess good written and verbal communication skills. Must be able to understand and follow oral and written instructions and information. Must be able to read, comprehend, and interpret a broad range of materials, and gather and select the most pertinent information; collect, correlate, evaluate, and analyze facts/data and develop sound conclusions; understand resource management policies and program development. Ability to maintain a high degree of accuracy and precision. Prioritize work to meet/set deadlines and produce written documents in a timely fashion. Must possess a valid driver’s license and proof of personal vehicle insurance, and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to obtain and maintain boat operator certification within one (1) month from date of hire and maintain throughout period duration of employment. PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to qualify as a DAR Scientific Diver. Must be capable of handling all necessary diving equipment and procedures required in conducting underwater research from shore or small boats. Must be able to work long hours in the sun, aboard small boats in coastal and oceanic waters. Ability to lift and carry up to fifty (50) pounds of scuba gear and equipment unassisted. SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Marine Science, Biological Science, Environmental Science, Oceanography, or related field involving studies of coral reef ecosystems. Completion of Quantitative Underwater Ecological Survey Techniques (QUEST) and/or other specific underwater monitoring training program. SCUBA certification above basic entry level with a minimum certification of Rescue diver from a nationally, or internationally recognized diver training agency (PADI, NAUI, etc.) and have a minimum of forty (40) logged dives or have DAR Scientific Diver Certification, NOAA Scientific or Working Diver Certification or previous authorization as a scientific diver from an American Academy of Underwater Sciences (AAUS) accredited organization. Experience with GPS receivers and data. Experience with underwater digital videography and photography, digital image, and non-linear editing.
