Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources (CTAHR), Department of Plant and Environmental Protection Sciences (PEPS), located at the Komohana Research and Extension Center in Hilo, Hawai‘i.  Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. 

MINIMUM HOURLY RATE:  $18.19/Hour. 

DUTIES:  Assists with field and laboratory studies on the biology of Rapid Ohia Death (ROD) fungal pathogen (Ceratocystis) and any potential insect vectors. Field trials on insect community ecology, biology, forestry, and microbiology in infected and uninfected areas. This may also include implementation, testing and monitoring of management strategies. Collects data, including insect identification, quantification of insect species, and regional occurrence and community shift in insect species. Laboratory tasks include insect colony maintenance, rearing, insect identification, insect dissections, and molecular DNA extraction and potential screening for pathogens using qPCR. Analyzes data, including logging data into a spreadsheet, performing statistical analysis of data, and analysis of quantitative molecular data. Compiles products by synthesizing field data into research reports both for state and agency reporting and for scientific publications. Will contribute to the written portions of these products. Participates in community outreach regarding ROD and shares results at relevant research meetings. 

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING:  Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university.  EXPERIENCE:  At least one (1) year of experience with entomological, forestry, or ecological field work.  ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS:  Knowledge of insect identification, field research, and insect rearing techniques. Ability to use a personal computer and office software, including Microsoft Office.  Must possess a valid driver’s license and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Post Offer/Employment Condition:  Must be able to pass a post offer criminal background check.   PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS:  Ability to hike moderate to long distances in Hawaiian rain forest environments at various elevations. Able to lift and carry up to fifteen (15) pounds unassisted. SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:  General experience working with insects.
