This position is located in Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park, in the Division of Resource Management. Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park (KAHO) is located in Kailua-Kona on the Island of Hawaii, approximately three miles from the Kona International Airport and five miles northwest of Kailua-Kona. The park is at sea level and averages less than 25 inches of rainfall annually. It includes three beaches and extensive cultural and archeological sites. Complete shopping facilities and rental units are available in Kailua-Kona. This is a high cost of living area. Hospital and medical facilities are five to ten miles away. Public schools are conveniently located within the surrounding area and distant bus service is provided for students. No public transportation is available.
This position is a full-time temporary position not-to-exceed 1 year; however this position may be terminated sooner, or extended up to a total of 2 years, depending on management needs. We anticipate selecting up to five positions from this announcement.
Special Consideration: The island of Hawaii is subject to high concentrations of volcanic fumes, especially sulfur dioxide gasses. The fumes are known to be hazardous to an unborn fetus, and persons with heart and respiratory problems. The Kona coast primarily experiences vog conditions throughout the year, and occasionally eastern Hawaii island and other Hawaiian islands. Long-term effects on normal healthy persons are unknown.

As part of the National Park Service's efforts to preserve, interpret, and perpetuate traditional Hawaiian activities and culture at Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park, the incumbent will focus on the historic preservation and restoration of the Aimakapa Fishpond as part of the Malama Aimakapa: ‘Aimakapa Fishpond Wetlands Restoration Project. OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Probationary Period: If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period.
Incidental Driving: You may be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties. Prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year thereafter (or more frequently if management determines such need exists), you will be required to sign an affidavit certifying to your possession of a valid State issued drivers license that is current and has not been revoked, suspended, canceled, or otherwise disqualified in any way to prohibit your operation of a motor vehicle.
Relocation: Travel, transportation, and relocation expenses will not be paid. All travel, transportation, and relocation expenses associated with reporting for duty in this position will be the sole responsibility of the selected employee.
Uniform: You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
Work Schedule: You may be required to work evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
Government Credit Card: You will be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government credit card with purchase authority.
Telework: The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework only during an emergency or natural disaster.
