Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Lyon Arboretum, located in Honolulu, Hawai‘i.  Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.

MINIMUM MONTHLY SALARY:  $2,372/Mon.

DUTIES:  Assists in the delivery of Hawaiian cultural, plant and natural science related curriculum for Lyon Arboretum's (PK-12) school programs, intersession and summer children's classes. Provides support for the education office (scheduling school visits, tours, docents, volunteers, record keeping, public relations, social media, purchasing of supplies) and other duties associated with the Lyon Arboretum education and community outreach programs. Assists with the daily preparation of instructional equipment and materials and routine maintenance of the Children's Learning Center, Education Center, and Children's Garden. Assists in the planning and coordination of the Arboretum's adult education programs. Assists with the recruitment, retention and training of Lyon Arboretum volunteers. Assists with the development of interpretive materials for educational exhibits. Assists with the supervision of student assistants, interns, and volunteers.

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING:  Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Natural Sciences, Education, Hawaiian Studies, Environmental Studies or other closely related fields.  EXPERIENCE:  At least one (1) year of experience with primary responsibilities of teaching in a formal or informal setting.  ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS:  Knowledge and understanding of Hawai‘i natural history, principles associated with standards-based education and informal education. Fluent in English and proficient in Hawaiian. Demonstrated ability to recognize problems, identify possible causes and resolve the full range of problems that may occur in the teaching of PK-12 students and working with a diverse public audience. Demonstrated ability to understand oral and written documentation, writes clearly and effectively, and verbally communicates in a positive manner in a variety of situations. Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and apply word processing and spreadsheet software. Post Offer/Employment Conditions: Must be able to pass post-offer criminal background check.   PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS:  Ability to work in wet and muddy conditions and on uneven terrain.  Must be able to lift and carry up to forty (40) pounds unassisted. SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:  Teaching experience in an informal education program at a botanical garden, nature center, or museum.  Academically trained or demonstrated experience in topics of sustainability, environmental education, Hawaiian natural history, tropical gardening, and/or plant sciences.  Must be committed and sensitive to the needs of adults and children.  Excellent working knowledge of Hawai‘i’s natural resources, native Hawaiian and Polynesian plants.  Strong commitment to 21st Century Learning in informal education. Very comfortable in an outdoor work environment.  Should be able to work well and communicate effectively with large groups and with individuals of all ages.  Team oriented and possesses excellent oral, written and interpersonal skills.  Experience with University of Hawai‘i administrative procedures.
