Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit. Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), located in Honolulu, Hawai‘i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.
MONTHLY SALARY RANGE: $2,372-$4,730/Mon.
DUTIES: Initiates, plans, develops and implements an environmental outreach and education program with the Division of State Parks (DSP) and Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW) at Kaena Point, Oahu, Hawai‘i. Educates visitors and users of the Kaena Point area including school groups, community members, tourists, and specialized groups on the purpose of natural and cultural resource management issues. Develops and manages a volunteer docent program. Conducts user surveys and analyzes responses, monitors visitors and assess area capacity and conditions. Coordinates volunteer projects, outreach, and educational activities. Develops and disseminates outreach materials. Coordinates volunteer projects by conducting natural and cultural resource management activities, including monitoring. Produces reports of work conducted.
PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING: Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Natural Sciences, Social Sciences, or a related field. EXPERIENCE: One to three (1-3) years of experience working with conservation or resource management issues in Hawai‘i. One to three years (1-3) of experience working with outreach and education components of natural and cultural resource management, managing human use of natural and cultural resources and conservation oriented projects. ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS: Knowledge of the Hawaiian natural and cultural resources processes and cultural history in Hawai‘i. Working knowledge of word processing and desktop publishing software including PowerPoint, InDesign, and Excel. Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing. Able to initiate, plan, coordinate, and implement outreach and education programs. Must possess a valid driver’s license and maintain throughout duration of employment. Post Offer/Employment Conditions: Must be able to pass a post offer criminal background check. Must possess the American Red Cross Certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain and maintain the certificate following the training provided within three (3) months from date of hire) and maintain throughout duration of employment. Must be able to pass 4-Wheel Drive training and maintain throughout duration of employment. Must complete defensive driving course. PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS: Ability to hike up to six (6) miles in remote areas and rugged terrain. Able to backpack and lift up to thirty (30) pounds unassisted. SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS: Familiarity with federally listed plants, animals, and natural and cultural resource management issues on the Island of Oahu. Specialized experience in working with government land based agencies and community groups. Specialized experience working independently to accomplish a major project. Experience in working on resource conservation projects in Hawai‘i. Ability to efficiently operate a website, and pamphlet design software.
