Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Biosciences Research Center (PBRC), Center for Conservation Research & Training (CCRT), Pacific Islands Climate Change Cooperative (PICCC), located in Honolulu, Hawai‘i.  Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.

MINIMUM MONTHLY SALARY:  $3,039/Mon. 

DUTIES:  Serves as the key member of the PICCC team, providing strategic communications support.  Works with PICCC staff, Steering Committee, other Landscape Conservation Cooperatives (LCC), Pacific Island communities, and throughout the cooperative conservation community to communicate PICCC’s work/activities addressing climate change impacts on landscape, habitat, and cultural resource conservation as well as adaptation to these impacts. Serves as the primary point of contact on public affairs, environmental information, and outreach issues for the organization at the local, national, and global levels; is a key contributor to the development, improvement, control, and efficiencies of programs and policies related to outreach; and often serves as the official spokesperson for assigned areas, and is responsible for providing expertise to PICCC members’ public affairs and outreach personnel regarding assigned areas or programs as requested. Directly supports the PICCC Steering Committee, including attending Steering Committee meetings.  Work products and activities consistently reflect a full up-to-date utilization of the methods, approaches, and techniques involved in environmental information, public affairs, and outreach and demonstrates consistent factual reliability. Develops program guidance and priorities with the PICCC Coordinator, with input and concurrence by the Steering Committee. 

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING:  Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in the Biological Sciences, Journalism, Communications, Public Relations, or Marketing.  EXPERIENCE:  Three to five (3-5) years of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for public relations, journalism, marketing, or managing special events in the research field.  ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS:  Proven expertise in science communications, specifically in climate change, ecology, and/or biology research.  Considerable working knowledge and understanding of principles, practices, and techniques in  journalism, media, public relations, marketing, social service, and/or government relations, as it relates to environmental impact/conservation awareness as demonstrated by the broad knowledge of the full range of pertinent standard and evolving concepts, principles, and methodologies.  Working knowledge of and skill in utilizing new and emerging web-based technology, strategic communications, and marketing, including social media. Demonstrated ability to assimilate information from a variety of sources, analyze information, and translate extremely complex and highly technical information and terminology into language that can be understood by persons unfamiliar with such information.  Demonstrated ability to write and edit news releases, articles, and speeches and to adapt them to various audiences, including the general media.  Demonstrated ability to convert basic ideas into items of interest to the media and the general public and to communicate complex issues and concepts to a general audience.  Ability to maintain effective working relationships with news media representatives, government/non-government organizations, Federal, State, and territory agency employees in Washington, D.C. and the insular Pacific. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to pass a post offer criminal background check.  PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS:  Must be able to lift and carry up to fifty (50) pounds unassisted. POLICY AND/OR REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS:  As a condition of employment, employee will be subject to all applicable RCUH policies and procedures and, as applicable, subject to University of Hawai‘i's and/or business entity's policies and procedures.  Violation of RCUH's, UH's, or business entity's policies and/or procedures or applicable State or Federal laws and/or regulations may lead to disciplinary action (including, but not limited to possible termination of employment, personal fines, civil and/or criminal penalties, etc.). 

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:  Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university in the Biological Sciences, Journalism, Communications, or Business Administration. At least one (1) year of applicable experience communicating about environmental/conservation issues to communities in Hawai‘i and/or Pacific Islands. Previous experience and knowledge of local, national, and/or international environmental/conservation issues. Experience as a professional journalist and/or extensive knowledge of advertising, marketing, public relations, or familiarity with environmental/conservation issues. Demonstrated success in developing communication strategies, outreach plans, and other informational materials/products to inform/educate the public and promote programs, especially to ethnically and socio-economically diverse audiences.
