‘Alalā were last observed in the wild in 2002, and are maintained at the Keauhou and Maui Bird Conservation Centers (KBCC, MBCC), where the species is part of an intensive breeding and release program. Beginning in November 2016 approximately 12 birds will reintroduced annually into suitably restored habitat. The Research Assistant will work as part of a team responsible for both pre-release preparation and post-release monitoring of ‘Alalā. The role of this Research Assistant will have a technical focus, and will include assisting with establishing and maintaining release infrastructure (feeder stations, weighing scales, RFID readers, automated telemetry towers, video monitoring systems, off-grid power supply and communications), and where required assisting with caring for birds in pre-release aviaries, radio tracking released individuals, preparing and provisioning supplementary food, data management; and other duties as assigned.

The Research Assistant will be based between the Keauhou Bird Conservation Center (near Volcano), and the release base and field site (near Mountain View) on Hawai‘i Island. This is a seasonal position with a duration of approximately 6 months but no more than 12 months. The online application will close on Thursday, Septermber 29, 2016 at 6:30pm Hawai‘i time.
