MKFRP FIELD CREW LEADER/TECHNICIAN – ID# 16264. 

 

Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit.  Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), Mauna Kea Forest Restoration Project (MKFRP), located in Hilo, Hawaii. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. 

 

MONTHLY SALARY RANGE:  $2,320-$3,686/Mon. 

 

DUTIES:  Implements forest restoration efforts as directed by the MKFR Project Coordinator.  Supervises field personnel, oversees Outreach Facilitator and up to twenty-five (25) volunteers in land management, forest restoration, and applied research on Mauna Kea.  Organizes work crews and field schedules.  Conducts restoration of dryland forest including seed collection, propagation, preparation, outplanting, and monitoring of native species at restoration areas.  Controls non-native plants through chemical and mechanical means, monitors and controls non-native predators, feral pigs, mouflon sheep, and goats at restoration areas on Mauna Kea, and supervises the constructing of and maintenance fence lines.  Assists public relations activities.  Trains crew and volunteers in general safety, planting and control techniques, and equipment use.  Responsible for the use, maintenance, and inventory of tools, equipment, and supplies.  Establishes and monitors transects to evaluate forest recovery and plant and bird distributions.  Collects and analyzes technical field data and creates computer reports.  Creates Geographic Information System (GIS) maps with Global Positioning Systems (GPS) to record restoration work and pesticide usage. 

 

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING:  Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Biological, Natural Resource Management, Geography, Environmental Science, or Hawaiian Studies with basic/related biology courses.  EXPERIENCE:  At least three (3) years of experience in or related to managing natural resources in Hawaii. This includes experience in forest restoration or management, natural resource monitoring techniques and weed, ungulate, rodent, and other threat control methods in Hawaii. Experience needs to be documented well and acquired under the employment of an academic institution, governmental agency, private company, non-profit organization in the appropriate field. Must include training and experience in application of herbicides and insecticides, in remote mountain forest situations in a manner following all safety standards.  At least one (1) year of supervisory experience (or must attend a minimum of six (6) supervisory training courses in the first twelve (12) months of employment and all RCUH supervisory training classes).  ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS:  Good knowledge of native and invasive Hawaiian flora and fauna, and outplanting of native plants.  Working knowledge of computers, including word-processing, database construction, and GPS/GIS; Hawaiian natural history, native animals, general botanical, ecological principles, Hawaiian culture, including ethnobotany, basic experimental design and implementation, vegetation, animal and insect monitoring techniques;  safe use of firearms, and herbicide application. Able to identify native and non-native plant species of Mauna Kea.  Ability to assist in standard vegetation techniques (e.g. count plots and point intercept) and accurately recording observed values. Knowledge of rodent and ungulate control methods. Proficient ability to use altimeter, compass and maps. Computer literate. Able to draw accurate schematic maps. Ability to record and utilize biological data with a Global Positioning System (GPS). Proficient ability to use word processing, database, and spread sheet programs. Proficient ability to control common forest weeds with herbicide. Proficient ability to set rat traps and repair fences in remote areas. Proficient ability to use common hand tools for forestry work. Able to communicate complex ideas to large groups of people with diverse backgrounds and capable of contributing to a complex community-based project.  Able to coordinate, manage, and lead work trips and outdoor activities safely over challenging terrain.  Able to operate power tools including weed eaters, generators, etc.  Able to input field data into a computer, analyze field data using database and spreadsheet programs, and prepare draft reports.  Able to apply herbicide.  Must have the skills to maintain tool and supply inventory. Must possess a valid driver’s license and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Must be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle with manual transmission.  Must be able to drive a vehicle with a trailer attached.  Post Offer/Employment Condition:  Must be able to pass a criminal background check and obtain and maintain National Rifle Association or National Park Service and State of Hawaii Hunter Safety Program firearms certification within six (6) months from date of hire and maintain throughout duration of employment. As a condition of employment, all certifications must be obtained and maintained as specified by the certificating agency.  Must possess the American Red Cross Certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain and maintain the certificate following the training provided within six (6) months from date of hire and maintain throughout duration of employment). Must be able to obtain chainsaw certification within twelve (12) months of hire.  PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS:  Able to lift and carry up to forty (40) pounds unassisted in isolated regions on irregular, unmarked terrain, often under adverse physical conditions, in remote areas.  Must be able to hike with backpack up to twelve (12) miles over rough terrain or thick and unmarked trail conditions and camp in remote areas under inclement and/or climatically extreme conditions for up to five (5) consecutive days. Post Offer/Employment Condition:  Must be able to work at 11,000 feet and pass a post offer high-altitude medical examination. SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:  Knowledge of endangered species in Hawaii. Previous education and experience in forest restoration, monitoring and natural resource management.  Use of herbicides to control weedy vegetation in a forest environment. Familiarity with biological database application and maintenance. Identification skills of native Hawaiian and non-native taxa.
