MNSRP OPERATIONS/GIS SPECIALIST – ID# 16262. 

 

Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit.  Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), Maui Nui Seabird Recovery Project (MNSRP), located on the islands of Maui Nui (Maui, Molokai and Lanai), Hawaii.  Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. 

 

MONTHLY SALARY RANGE:  $3,222-$5,719/Mon. 

 

DUTIES:  Designs and maintains MNSRP’s electronic tabular and spatial data systems related to seabird survey, inventory, and monitoring projects.  Evaluates project success and participates in mission planning with other members of the management team, partners, and agency representatives.  Develops geospatial models and performs quantitative and spatial analyses using statistical and geographic information system (GIS) software.  Designs and prepares data summaries for reports on accomplishments for funders and partners and presents the results of data analysis at periodic community and professional meetings.  Trains field staff in use of technical software, global positioning system (GPS) equipment, and data entry and retrieval.  Administers overall computer network system.  Participates in ground and aerial field operations.  Supervises up to eight (8) field staff or volunteers in field activities.  Participates in the management of MNSRP Field Biology Associates daily activities. 

 

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING:  Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Biology, Wildlife Ecology, or a related field.  (Five to seven (5-7) years of related work experience which demonstrates skill/knowledge to perform job duties and related training specific to job duties/responsibilities may substitute for a Bachelor’s Degree).  Coursework/training in GIS related programs/applications.  EXPERIENCE:  Two to four (2-4) years of experience working with tabular and spatial data management systems.  Experience developing and performing spatial analyses using GIS software.  Experience presenting results based on interpretation of spatial data in oral, graphic, or written formats.  ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS:  Knowledge of spatial analysis, GIS programming, graphic representation, computer modeling, and use of relational databases. Knowledge of current GPS technology.  Knowledge of basic methods in plant or animal ecology.  Knowledge of Hawaiian biota, especially seabirds, and threats from incipient alien plant and animal invasions in Hawaii. Excellent computer skills.  Proficient at using Microsoft Office Suite, MS Access databases, Trimble GPS system, and ArcGIS software.  Ability to read maps and aerial photographs.  Demonstrated ability to summarize, analyze, and develop written reports and presentations on results of project activities.  Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly both orally and in writing.  Must possess a valid driver’s license and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Must be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle with manual transmission.   Post Offer/Employment Conditions:  Must possess the American Red Cross Certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain the certificate following the training provided within three (3) months from date of hire and maintain throughout duration of employment). Must be able to complete basic helicopter safety course within six (6) months from date of hire.  Must be able to pass a criminal background check. Must be able to obtain and maintain National Rifle Association or National Park Service and State of Hawaii Hunter Safety Program firearms certification and maintain throughout duration of employment. As a condition of employment, all certifications must be obtained and maintained as specified by the certificating agency.  PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS:  Able to work outdoors in extremely rough terrain and under adverse weather conditions, up to five (5) consecutive days.  Able to lift and carry up to thirty-five (35) pounds unassisted. SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:  Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Natural Resources GIS or a related field.  Experience with the management of endangered species and control of invasive species in Hawaii.  Knowledge of and ability to work in Hawaii’s natural areas and with the Maui Nui community.
