PCSU/DAR OUTREACH SPECIALIST – ID# 15758.
Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit. Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the University of Hawaii, Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR), Division of Aquatic Resources (DAR), located in Honolulu, Hawaii. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.
MONTHLY SALARY RANGE: $2,705-$4,801/Mon.
DUTIES: Facilitates a cooperative outreach effort to raise public awareness regarding Hawaii’s aquatic resources, on-going research, resource conservation/management issues, and promote resource stewardship. Serves as the primary point of contact for the public on the island of Oahu; deals with various community, sport fishing and conservation groups, organizations, businesses, and educational institutions. Conducts outreach activities at various public events such as fishing tournaments, boat shows, community fairs, meetings, and conferences. Works closely with the Department of Education to assess needs and assist in developing approaches to enhance aquatic education in the schools.
PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING: Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university. EXPERIENCE: One to three (1-3) years of progressively responsible work experience in information education/training and aquatic/natural resources which includes work experience in a program of aquatic or other natural resource education, research or management that demonstrates knowledge of aquatic resources and local fishing practices, conservation principles and practices. ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS: Demonstrated knowledge of basic education or training methods and techniques; aquatic resources conservation, management, and protection issues, concerns. Basic principles and practices of fisheries research, development and management; practical knowledge of marine organisms in Hawaiian waters; important recreational and commercial fish species of the State; Hawaiian fishing methods/practices; aquatic and fishing safety and ethical practices; research methods and techniques; problem solving; and report writing. Understanding of State and Federal authorities, regulations, and guidelines related to aquatic resources and/or environmental policies. Knowledge of English grammar, sentence structure, abbreviations, spelling, capitalization, punctuation and word usage. Working knowledge of computers and relevant software programs. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; possess excellent public speaking/presentation skills; understand and carry out verbal and written instructions. Possess ability to produce informational materials acceptable for public distribution. Proficiency in using Microsoft Office applications. Must possess a valid driver’s license and maintain throughout the duration of employment. May be required to provide a clean driver’s abstract as deemed necessary by the job requirements and/or the project. If personal vehicle will be used for business purpose: Must possess proof of personal vehicle insurance and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Must also provide the RCUH Human Resources Department with driver’s license information and keep current throughout the duration of employment. Failure to meet this requirement or falsification of documents may result in disciplinary action including and up to termination of employment. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to pass a post offer criminal background check. SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in education, natural sciences, or marine sciences.
