The National Tropical Botanical Garden (NTBG) is seeking a dynamic and creative leader to serve as its Director of the South Shore Gardens (DSSG). This high-level position will oversee all aspects of operations in NTBG’s two flagship gardens (McBryde Garden and Allerton Garden) which are located on the south shore of the island of Kaua‘i adjacent to NTBG’s national headquarters.
The South Shore Gardens are currently undergoing a transformational change as NTBG seeks to grow the visitor numbers, earned revenue, and educational opportunities associated with these important properties. The DSSG will be an experienced leader with business administration experience that is capable of leading this exciting change and completing the implementation of the South Shore Business Plan and the McBryde Garden Renewal Project – both of which are designed to grow our visitor numbers while not compromising the sensitive cultural and environmental aspects of these properties. Additionally, this position will be responsible for the daily operations of horticulture, physical facilities, sales, marketing, safety and the south shore visitor program.
The Director of South Shore Gardens reports directly to the President and CEO of the National Tropical Botanical Garden and will work closely with the Chief Operating Officer and Chief Financial Officer as well as the Director of Philanthropy as a member of NTBG’s senior management team.
Requirements include:
Bachelors degree (Masters preferred) in Botanical Garden Management, Museum Management, Business Management, Horticulture, Botany, Ethnobotany, or a related field. Proven track record in nonprofit management required, while expertise in visitor industry services, sales and marketing, project management, Hawaiian culture, plant conservation and tropical horticulture are all valued assets that will be considered in selecting the ideal candidate.
Additional skills needed:
Excellent written and oral communication skills, managerial experience, and computer competence are required. The successful applicant will have proven team building skills and must demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively with a multicultural staff and the larger Kaua‘i community.
