Become part of Hawaii’s conservation story

SEASONAL FIELD ASSISTANT for work with the Kauai Forest Bird Recovery Project. Our project focuses on a variety of work with three critically-endangered endemic Hawaiian songbirds, the Akikiki, Akeke’e and Puaiohi that all inhabit the extremely wet, beautiful and rugged montane rainforest on the island of Kauai. This is our second field season focused primarily on (A) extraction of eggs from Akikiki and Akeke’e nests to start a captive breeding program for these two species, and (B) controlling rodents in core forest bird habitat. Field Assistant will help supervise field crews nest-searching and rat-control efforts, as well as search for endangered bird nests, conduct bird surveys, vegetation and habitat sampling, mist-net and band birds, and maintain rat control grids. Will also enter field and Geogrpahic information System (GIS) data, help maintain electronic records and databases, help Coordinator develop and present materials for outreach and environmental education, and assist with field logistics.
