The primary purpose of this position is to develop innovative programs in coastal communities that reflect national, state and local sustainable island living initiatives. This position will also serve as professional faculty with Hawai‘i Sea Grant’s Centers of Excellence and will plan, organize and conduct on-going and new extension programs aimed at identifying opportunities and solving needs and problems of the diverse coastal community on Hawai‘i Island. The responsibilities and primary functions include, but are not limited to: A. Developing and coordinating the implementation and evaluation of extension and educational/outreach projects on Hawai‘i Island with emphasis on policy development for sustainable land use and conservation practices; coastal, marine and watershed resource management; water quality; sustainability ocean recreation; and shoreline development. (15%) B. Serving as a technology-transfer and education/outreach link among community residents, island visitor and development industries, county, state and federal agencies and the University of Hawai‘i for best management practices as they relate to marine, coastal and watershed ecosystems throughout Hawai‘i and the nation. (15%) C. Providing lectures, workshops and seminars to community groups, schools and volunteer programs on a variety of topics including but not limited to near shore ecosystems, land use practices and human impacts as they relate to marine, coastal and watershed ecosystems and resources. (15%) D. Developing and maintaining partnerships with Hawai‘i Island policy makers, community, county and state agency leaders and cultivate their involvement in solution-oriented sustainable natural resource use and land use practices projects. (10%) E. Developing and supporting initiatives related to water resource sustainability, water quality, and water catchment. (10%) F. Overseeing effective public engagement volunteer programs that produce supplementary data sought by university or agency programs. Oversee the distillation and distribution of natural resource surveys, human use and socio-cultural data appropriate to Hawai‘i. (10%) G. Effectively administering and managing a Hawai‘i Sea Grant field office including the hiring and supervising of an office/projects staff members, procurement and maintenance of equipment, supplies, resource materials and contact databases. (10%) H. Assisting stakeholders in the identification of research needs with application to sustainable resource and land use practices, and facilitating the initiation of appropriate research within the university system to address Hawai‘i Island needs and issues. (5%) I. Writing grant proposals, managing and evaluating grant projects, producing progress reports for funded projects, and developing Hawai‘i Sea Grant annual work plans and annual performance reports for the National Sea Grant Office. Attending quarterly Hawai‘i Sea Grant staff meetings. (5%) J. Other duties as assigned. (5%)
