NKGHCP FIELD ASSISTANT – ID# 15450. Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit. (2) Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), North Kona Game Habitat Conservation Plan (NKGHCP) project, located on the island of Hawaii. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. MONTHLY SALARY RANGE: $1,730-$2,684/Mon. DUTIES: Participates in a wide variety of activities associated with the NKGHCP and the Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW) at the Puuwaawaa State Forest Reserve (PWW) and Puuanahulu Game Management Area (PGMA). Controls non-native plants through chemical and mechanical means, monitors and controls non-native predators (feral dogs, cats, and mongoose) and non-native ungulates (feral pigs, sheep, and goats), and assists in constructing and maintaining fence lines. Implements restoration and reforestation projects in tropical dry and mixed mesic forests, this includes but is not limited to, seed collection and processing, propagation, outplanting, and monitoring of native species within restoration areas. Collects and analyzes technical field data and assists with report writing. Assists with coordinating volunteers and interns, and works with other field technicians to conduct resource management work. Adapts to changing plans and communicates observations and ideas to supervisors to help develop solutions to new and on-going challenges faced in implementing project goals. PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING: High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent. EXPERIENCE: At least one (1) year field experience working in natural resource management or closely related field in Hawaii (at least one (1) year of college level course work from an accredited college or university in a related discipline (i.e., Biology, Zoology, or related Natural Science) may substitute for the experience requirement). Must have experience in helicopter operation procedures (or must attend helicopter training courses within six (6) months of hire). ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS: Knowledge of native Hawaiian flora and fauna and threats from alien species. Working knowledge of natural resource management practices, including the use of pesticides and pesticide application safety protocols (or must attend pesticide training courses within six (6) months of hire). Ability to use compass, map, and GPS hand-held units to navigate in remote areas. Ability to take detailed field notes and collect data. Ability to input field data into spreadsheets and databases, and assist in preparation of draft reports. Good verbal and written communication skills. Ability to safely apply pesticides. Ability to construct, maintain, and repair ungulate exclusion fences. Ability to hunt feral animals using firearms and traps. Ability to lead volunteers and to coordinate field projects and data collection. Must possess a valid driver’s license and maintain throughout the duration of employment. May be required to provide a clean driver’s abstract as deemed necessary by the job requirements and/or the project. Must be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle with manual transmission. If personal vehicle will be used for business purpose: Must possess proof of personal vehicle insurance and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Must also provide the RCUH Human Resources Department with driver’s license information and keep current throughout the duration of employment. Failure to meet this requirement or falsification of documents may result in disciplinary action including and up to termination of employment. Post Offer/Employment Conditions: Must possess the American Red Cross Certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain and maintain the certificate following the training provided within three (3) months from date of hire and maintain throughout duration of employment). Must be able to complete basic helicopter safety course within six (6) months of hire. Must be able to pass a criminal background check. Must be able to obtain and maintain National Rifle Association or National Park Service and State of Hawaii Hunter Safety Program firearms certification and maintain throughout duration of employment. As a condition of employment, all certifications must be obtained and maintained as specified by the certificating agency. Must legally be able to carry and use firearms within twelve (12) months of hire. PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS: Able to lift and carry up to forty (40) pounds unassisted on irregular, unmarked terrain, often under adverse physical conditions in remote areas. Must be able to hike with backpack up to twelve (12) miles over rough terrain, through thick vegetation, or unmarked trails and camp in remote areas under inclement and/or climatically extreme conditions for up to five (5) consecutive days. SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS: Experience in identification of native Hawaiian plants and non-native plants. Experience with use of Global Information Systems (GIS).
