The National Tropical Botanical Garden (NTBG) is seeking a dynamic and creative leader as full time Director of the South Shore Garden to oversee all aspects of operations in the South Shore Gardens (McBryde Garden and Allerton Garden) and to continue the transformation of these gardens as envisioned by the South Shore Business Plan and the McBryde Garden Renewal Project while not compromising the sensitive cultural and environmental aspects of these properties. The Director of South Shore Gardens reports directly to the President and CEO of the National Tropical Botanical Garden but will work closely with the Chief Operating Officer and Chief Financial Officer as well as the Director of Philanthropy to achieve the mission of the NTBG. This position entails working on long term strategic planning as a member of NTBG’s senior management team, while also overseeing the daily operations of horticulture, living collections, physical facilities, sales, marketing, safety and the visitor program. Requirements include: Bachelors degree (Masters preferred) in Horticulture, Botany, Ethnobotany, Botanical Garden Management, or a related field. Proven track record in nonprofit management, business management, visitor services, sales and marketing, project management, Hawaiian culture, plant conservation and tropical horticulture are all valued assets that will be considered in selecting the ideal candidate. Additional skills needed: Excellent written and oral communication skills, managerial experience, computer competence, and successful grant writing are required. The successful applicant will have proven team building skills and must demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively with a multicultural staff and the larger Kaua‘i community. Must possess the ability to operate a highly complex visitor program that generates significant revenue for NTBG while balancing the shared institutional priorities of 1) a safe workplace for employees and visitors, 2) protection of the NTBG’s assets, 3) revenue generation, and 4) a great public education experience.
